Are any of the FMJ, AP, API etc. surplus bullets more accurate than the other?

I know not to expect A-max or Solid bullet performance but I'd like to get the most out of plinking/practice with the cheaper bullets.

probable the AP would be the most consistent

KD185 is correct but weighting the bullets,no matter if they are AP, API, APIT or Tracers and grouping by weight will give you even better groupings.

I'll definately try sorting by weight. What range should be sufficient? +or- 2 grains per group? 3? 4?

I'm sitting on about 500 of the new 690 South African FMJs from Wideners that I got in a deal with some other stuff on the EE. Should I sell them and buy some AP or something else or should they do well enough?

M2 AP (700 gr class) are the most accurate of surplus bullets.  When sorting them, sort first for base type.  There are several different types of bases...meaning the hole at the bottom of the case is a different size.  Then sort for weight.

If you really want to have fun sorting, sort for length from the base to the ogive.  I think base type and ogive length are more important than weight.

APTI's are the funnest!

Resizing them might help also.  Pulled bullets tend to have nasty tool marks.
I don't resize for my M2, but a friend of mine swears by it for his bolt gun.

I consider resizing surplus projos absolutely MANDATORY.  You don't want your barrel to have to swage out of round bullets.  Makes for excessive pressure, uneven copper fouling (more on the sides that are oversized), and is generally just bad.

I've got 2000 of the Widners new 690 South African FMJs.  Unfortunately, I haven't loaded or shot any of them yet.  I sure as heck hope they're good enough for plinking.

I'd shoot the heck out of the South African ball.

They're in the same class as AP, meaning around 690 grains.  Plus they have the advantage of more recent manufacture than AP (which is all WW-II) and they're all made by one contractor (M2AP was made by a half dozen contractors) so they should be more accurate with a good sort.

With 2000, I'd better get to sorting right away!    Thanks for the positive news.
