There's been a lot of development in the world in the last several years or so towards the perfect modern combat rifle (SCAR, ACR, Tavor, G36, ARX 160, etc.).

In the USA, if a person wants a decent modern combat rifle they are looking at at least $600 in normal times for an AR-15.

Why has no one appeared with something less expensive?  How about something very basic and stripped down for $300 or $400?  I'm picturing something like an even more basic AR-18 for civilian use...something sort of like the STEN submachinegun concept, but for semi-automatic rifles.

They made a civilian version of the AR18 it's the AR180 it is a pre-ban weapon and there was 3 different importers. They later introduced the AR180B around 2001 it sold for around $500 but never seemed to take off. I think it was due to timing and the fact that it was a plastic lower. Not to mention they had production issues and then the ban expired in 04 and opened up many more options in the market place.

Can I see this firearm in a video game, or on ABC/CBS/CNN/FOX/MSNBC/NBC reports about our Armed Forces?

Because the world has advanced further than the sten gun days and people want the guns carried by cops and military...not zip guns

I don't know, good question. I was thinking they could make a fairly cheap and effective rifle with a stamped sheet metal receiver in 5.7x28mm that's simple blowback.

I've been in manufacturing for a couple decades now and I'm honestly shocked at how cheap good AR's are. Hundreds of precision parts that all work in perfect harmony at very high speeds for less $$ than a set of good tires for your truck.

The manufacture of an AK-74 in Russia is still quite cheap, under $100...and in spite of those who don't like them, as a design type, are a GOOD basic choice in a self defense carbine. As for other inexpensive defensive arms, there is a good mark up on current basic ARs, they could sell cheaper...having said this, in 2013 dollars the basic S&W Sport or the basic DPMS light sixteen at their pricepoints of around $700 is still pretty impressive to me. In spite of the current mess wit the Conneticut shootings the market was/is flooded with AR's and AK's, and just  like last time after a period of time buyers remorse will set in for some and the panic buys will come out of the woodwork and once again there will be a buyers market.

The Kel-Tec SU16 is about as low cost as you can get in the USA.
