CMMG Banshee FE MkGs - Blowback Issue (Page 1 of 2)

Brand new MkGs, FE (fixed ejector), 9mm, 8". I'm running a Rugged Sub9 suppressor, and KynSHOT RB5000HP buffer with Tubb flat spring (standard AR-15). After the 150 rds, I've had 3 or 4 FTFeeds where the bolt didn't go completely forward into battery. It occurred with a few different types of 147gr FMJ ammo (including American Eagle), and with both a Magpul and OEM Glock mag. Any ideas? Do these maybe just need a break in? I cleaned everything real well, including the chamber, prior to shooting it. Any and all suggestions are appreciated. ETA: I edited the thread title to be applicable to the blowback issue rather than the FTFeeds which just seemed to be a break-in issue because the gun is reliable now. |
| I have the same setup, although it’s an older 8” MkGs that was retrofitted with the FE conversion. I also ran into some issues using the Tubbs flat wire spring with the Kynshot buffer. I went back to the original round carbine spring, still keeping the Kynshot buffer, and that seemed to fix the issue. My recommendation is to try with a normal spring. I was running a CAT MOB suppressor on 3-lug. |

Any idea why a stiffer spring might cause the bolt not to go into battery? |

It's not so much the gas, but the particulates of unburnt powder that's annoying me. It feels like getting sandblasted in the side of the face. My buddy's suppressed Ruger PC Charger, which is direct blowback, doesn't do this. I was under the impression that the CMMG radial delayed blowback was supposed to perform at least somewhat better suppressed than direct blowback, not worse. Otherwise I never would have bought it. The Griffin SN-ACH CH doesn't make any noticeable difference either. Definitely not happy with this thing currently. |

I run my CMMG RDB's in full auto and 99% of the time suppressed. I also have full auto MP5's and other SMG's. The CMMG RDB suppresses very well and I don't have any issues getting sandblasted or getting hit with any debris. I don't have a Sub9 can though. I have several different cans though. I have high speed videos of them firing on my site and I don't see this platform being that gassy. In fact, I was just out shooting recently with a friend that is a lefty and it didn't bother him either. I don't use any special CH's although I do like the Griffin ones but not for any gas reduction features. I do have a friend with a Sub9 but haven't been able to meet him at the range with it yet. |

So what do you think is the reason for mine doing this? Seems as if it’s unlocking too soon. I tried an H3 buffer and extra power spring and it didn’t resolve this. Is there a noticeable difference between the 5” and 8” in this regard? Mine is 8”. |
|
I run an 8" also. You are not running the buffer setup I recommended. They aren't cheap so I understand if you don't want to experiment. If you were local to me, we could easily do some comparisons. Maybe ask around for anyone local to you that may have a CMMG setup you can compare. I have some other ideas but don't have time to get into all those details right now. |
|
I'm running a 9mm FE Banshee with a standard lower using MEAN mag inserts. No problems. Standard Colt carbine spring and Colt H2 buffer. Barrel (upper) is a Broad River Tactical SD upper with B&T SD suppressor. I would start with getting rid of the buffer/spring setup you have and going back to stock and working from there. |

That’s why I asked earlier if you think your buffer setup would help mitigate this issue. I understand it was more meant to make the gun shoot as soft as possible, but it seems to involve less buffer weight and spring stiffness, which I would think might only make my issue worse. Assuming my issues is premature bolt unlocking. But I could be wrong. ETA: I’m confusing this thread for another I started, which is where I asked earlier about your buffer system. I don’t see all the parts available on your site, maybe I’m missing them. |

I got a new mic, redid the test on my FE RDB with CMMG 8” barrel and they were all loud, all indistinguishable, in person and on video. I used the same mic for a 5.56 four suppressor video and each were easy to distinguish on video and the 2 quietest were easy to distinguish without ear pro. I also used to run a 5” CMMG and I also have another host with an Amphibian 4.x” barrel. I don’t recall either of them being unusually loud, albeit with different suppressors that are probably louder than the 4 I mentioned. So, I switched the 8” back to the 5”, but need to retest. Not sure if anyone can follow this maze of anecdotes, but it seems to me the 8” CMMG barrel was unlocking too early and having too much port pop. Perhaps (or likely) due to excessive headspace, a known issue that kills ejector springs, which mine also did in Banshee configuration. |

Shooting this side by side with a buddy’s suppressed (YHM R9) Ruger PC Charger, which is direct blowback, same ammo, there is no discernible difference in sound reduction. I spent the extra money on the Banshee because I was lead to believe that the radial delayed blowback action would reduce port noise and therefore be quieter overall. Mine isn’t. If this is a headspace issue causing it to unlock too soon, is this something that CMMG can fix for me? I definitely don’t want to spend money and energy on buffer parts just to have the same problem if it’s a headspace issue. Really want to get this thing working properly but getting a lot of mixed info. On a positive note, the malfunctions have ceased over the last 200 rds. |

Really want to get this thing working properly but getting a lot of mixed info. On a positive note, the malfunctions have ceased over the last 200 rds. It was that video I did where CMMG finally replaced my original barrel. They kept telling me nothing was wrong even after the original barrel kept breaking firing pins, cam pins, extractors and extractor retention pins. Coincidentally, I was just talking to a customer yesterday that encountered breaking his extractor at the same place shown in my video. His setup is new and he said his extractor broke at 300 rounds. If you look closely at the video, you can also see how the first factory CMMG barrel is kicking more than the custom stainless and the 2nd factory CMMG barrel. ![]() CMMG RDB Excessive Headspace I got so fed up with their barrels, I started converting straight blowback barrels for the CMMG system and then ultimately getting my own run of 416R stainless barrels made. I shoot a LOT of full auto. I have never broken an extractor ever again since I stopped using their barrels. Now my first barrel was really bad. I suspect there are some barrels out there was the headspacing isn't as excessive as mine was but bad enough that it has more noticeable recoil than one that is done right. Like CJofFL mentioned above. It costed me two CMMG BCG / BBL combo kits back around 2017/2018 to prove to CMMG that there were inconsistencies in their products. That is why I was thinking maybe you could compare to someone local that has good working CMMG RDB setup instead of doing what I did back then. You are right that a different buffer tube, buffer and spring isn't going to do squat if you have a barrel with excessive headspacing. You may be thinking why bother dealing with it with all these problems? It is because it is the ONLY 9mm SMG on this planet that can be configured to have a slow cyclic rate and low reciprocating mass. Nothing else out there can run at around 600RPM with only like 13oz of reciprocating mass. MP5 is low at 9.3oz but then it shoots like 850RPM. Kuna is delayed blowback but the bolt is really heavy at 19oz. Something like the MPX has a LW BCG but runs at over 1000RPM when I made a post sample one. In the video below, I have to engage the circles with 1 round minimum, small rectangle 2 rounds, square 3 rounds, big rectangle 4 rounds. Since it leverages the buffer tube we can leverage all the many different options out there for tuning. ![]() C3Junkie custom 9mm Banshee 12-2025 |

I don't see all the parts available on your site, maybe I'm missing them. As you can see from my posts, I'm very focused on the cyclic rate as well as impulse in full auto. The 5000HP was not as smooth as the 5007 when I tested it and I can't remember the RoF details but I'm sure it wasn't as slow either. The 5007 has more mass to help push the bolt into battery as well dampen the initial impulse. I think the HP is better suited for a straight blowback. The 5000HP has been out for several years....way before the FE Banshee came out which uses a 55 degree bolt instead of a 50 degree bolt like the old Banshee. Kynshot recently reached out to me and is supposed to be sending me another variant to test but I haven't received it yet. I don't sell the Kynshots since Botach sells them cheaper than dealer pricing so what's the point? I offer free shipping so I would basically be paying people to buy the buffers from me. Kynshot knows Botach is selling lower than MAP pricing and supposedly have been telling them to stop doing that. I also recommend the Warthog flat spring but recent batches have been too tight to fit over the 5007 so I have a custom order that I am waiting on with the correct ID for the 5007. I do sell an A5 equivalent tube and when I get those springs, I will sell the springs as well. Again, I'm waiting on the prototype from Kynshot and may sell them if testing goes well. There are a LOT of people running what I call the ARS setup and I haven't heard any complaints. I've been recommending this since around 2017 when the Banshee first came out. The 'wildcard' configuration in Chester's Hobbies video is my ARS setup: ![]() Ultimate 9mm PCC Comparison PART 2 | CMMG Dissent (CMMG Dissent vs Banshee vs Sig MPX vs MP5) Although he uses a 308 Tubb spring which I never recommended. We discussed it on Reddit and he said that is all he could find at the time. I think he has switched to the 556 Tubb these days. I also have my own magnetic prototype I am testing as the Omni Robusta and Miculek both sheared apart on me. I am doing durability testing of my design right now. So I may sell those if I am unable to break it. All that said, I'm not saying a standard spring or H or H1 or H2 isn't going to work. Just not as smooth and shoots faster than the range I'm after. I think the picture below is very compelling showing that the lighter magnetic buffer is getting almost 200RPM slower cyclic rate than an H2 buffer. However, as mentioned above the Omni Robusta eventually sheared apart and I'm doing durability / endurance testing on my own design right now and getting a slower cyclic rate (570 RPM) with a prototype 3.7oz buffer. So total reciprocating mass of 12.7oz. ![]() |
| I appreciate all the info regarding the buffer system, tuning, etc., I really do. But I need to get this excessive blowback issue figured out first, which likely won’t be solved by tuning the buffer system, would you agree? If so, I guess I need to contact CMMG. |

| amphibian, when you say excessive headspace, how much are we talking? CMMG's reamer just running the chambers deep & they're shipping it? Firing pin driving the case forward against the shoulder before ignition & the case slamming back against the bolt? |

However, as I also already mentioned, it was hard for me to convince CMMG there was an issue until I did high speed video and compared to another one of their factory barrels....which is why I was saying to try to find someone local you can compare to. It is an up hill battle dealing with their CS. You can try removing the extractor from the bolt as a test and see if it extracts like I described above if you can't find anyone local to do some testing with. It sounds like you bought a complete gun from them though? They are more receptive to customers that spent a bunch of money on their complete guns than people that just buy components so maybe they will help you more. I think CJofFL only bought their BCG / BBL combo and they tell those customers basically tough luck with ejector spring failures while I have heard they give big discounts to people that bought complete guns to get their FE Retrofit kits to fix their issues. |

Here is CMMG's response regarding the excessive gas and grit coming out of the ejection port: "Thank you for reaching out to CMMG. I would like to help with the back pressure from the suppressor. Please note that with any suppressed firearm, you’re essentially trading muzzle blast for back pressure. Since the suppressor traps gas to keep it quiet, a good chunk of that pressure has to vent out of the ejection port once the bolt cycles. While you'll typically see more gas with a blowback system (even Radial Delayed) than a DI system, the physics are the same: that gas has to go somewhere. You can definitely mitigate it with gas-busting charging handles or low-backpressure suppressors, but there’s no way to eliminate it entirely. It’s just the nature of the beast when running suppressed, that gas is always going to find the path of least resistance." So in their opinion this is normal and to be expected, whereas others say they don't experience this problem with a similar setup. Not sure where this leaves me with this thing... |

Kuna uses a heavy 19oz bolt which I think is excessive for something delayed blowback which is why I think you see in many reviews it not being considered as smooth as a Stribog or MP5. Did you try shooting it with the stock buffer and spring? I’ll point out that Amphibian shoots ammo that is hotter than my own preference, so if he’s not having this problem (on auto) there may be something wrong with your gun or your ammo. I’d change the ammo and bring the insides of the gun back to stock as step 1. I also don’t usually get this problem, using straight blowback guns and traditional, full backpressure cans. Occasionally I’ll find some ammo that does it, a bit, but not as bad as you’re describing. |

How would the weaker stock spring and lighter weight buffer improve the blowback issue? That doesn’t make sense. |

I just put a Colt 9mm Gas deflector/spring on my 9mm FE. I didn't bother fitting the stock ejection port door because I wasn't sure if it would work, so I cut a tube to slide over the ejection port cover rod and keep the deflector from shifting forward. It worked great and is still on the gun. |
If you are putting a lot of effort into arguing with me, you are probably really just wasting your time, sorry.

It works great with my CMMG FE 9mm. FRT, can, and bulk ammo create a gas factory. Old photo from when apart. Attached File Had to remove the barrel nut, I think I just used a standard castle nut wrench (Magpul), switched them out, and reassembled (torque wrench). Tried the CMMG .22 deflector on another; it wasn't as effective. I'm sure I could have cut the CMMG FE ejection port door to fit, but I didn't. I found this mod very effective. Added on a PRI gasbuster charging handle because hey why not. |

I find it odd that other people don’t have the same problem, unless it really is tolerance issue with the barrels. |

Even the MOB builds up gas, it traps a lot of the soft gas. Some 9mm ammo is dirtier than orhers too. Put a mag of 147gr AE through and there is a lot of gas. I really like this MOD a lot. I reload with fast clean powders, helps some, but I am very glad this is on there still. Have had no malfunctions. |

Just an FYI that I have been collaborating with Kynshot on a new hydraulic buffer. I tested this with one of my friends that is a recently retired LE firearms instructor that also happens to be a lefty and is always observant on how gassy a gun is or isn't. He commented that this new buffer is the best in terms of being the least gassy of all the buffers we have tested. However, as I mentioned before if your headspacing is off, no buffer will help that. |
