need to make minor mods to web gear...i s*ck at hand sewing and need a cheap, sturdy sewing machine...69 bonded nylon thread thru (on edges) 4 layers cordura and 1" web strap...speed is not an issue...fancy sewing patterns aren't needed...do you have a suggestion?
thanks

Sailrite.com + Old Japanese Kenmore machine.    You can tune up one of these old machines to sew heavy leather and half-inch thick layered  canvas or nylon, if you know what you're doing.

The Sailrite site has sections for the do-it-yourselfer which can teach you all this -- AND MUCH, Much More!   Good Luck My Fellow Sewing-Machine Jockey!

PS=>  Having your very own yard-sale Kenmore for those 'Special Projects' can relieve tension in an already-strained marital relationship.

To sew nylon goods you need a walking foot, industrial type machine. A juki is as good buy and will last a long time, not cheap though. REX makes a good machine at around $500, but I havent found a US importer for their industrial machines..

Good Luck!  Have patience, time, money reserves, an accomadting family, oh yeah did I mention patience?  Budget concerns?

You are looking at about 800-1000 when all said and done to get started.  It is easier to talk about doin than actually knuckling up to the task.    I started almost three years ago and am STILL learning, and luckily enough there are people who like my product ... and swear by it.

Have fun and watch your fingers and be prepared for many a service call.

Egg...it's impossible to find anyone in Illinois to do mods...sewing machine is for a few mods only, and i have no intention of making a business out of this...hopefully it won't cost more than $200...there are several good gear manufacturers around, but i am very tall and it is rare to find any gear that properly fits or is designed for Illinois weather (very hot and very cold), hence, mods are a necessity for me

would a $100 sewing machine from Wally World work ok? what features should i look for?
