I have one on an AR, so I already know I like it  , and want to put one on a Henry .44 but I'm unsure what length rail I'll need. It is 8" long, has 5" of eye relief and the eyepiece is 2.1" long and 1.4" high. The Talley/Henry mount seems too tall for this little scope. The Ashley Emerson mount looks fantastic but is for Marlins (4 mounting screws vs 3 for the Henry). This isn't a scout scope so I don't need or want an extended rail. I'd really like to be able to keep my rear sight, so with low QD Leupold rings I can pull the scope and use the irons. These are the rails I'm looking at. From mocking up the scope and using a ruler I think I can put the scope just forward of the hammer, thus avoiding a hammer extension, and still have good eye relief. The top of the rear sight seems like it might protrude about a third of an inch into the scope but the rail and the rings also might put the scope just over it. If I have to ditch the rear sight it's not the end of the world, I can use a Skinner dovetail sight as they're shorter than the factory rear sight. Henry rear sights are closer to the receiver, about 2 inches off.  Any thoughts? I've never put a scope on a levergun before so of course the first one I do is a tricky bastard.

I was an early adopter of the marlin GG. Tried some different glass on their factory weaver rail. The Eotech holo went flying, rail snapped right off. I hope they are using a bigger screw now, but mine were 6- something. Got the stubs extracted. Tiny screws. I was shooting near top end handloads . Yeah I don’t need that horsepower for elk. Dialed those back a lot. My first attempt, and it came out perfectly. I drilled the holes in the receiver larger and tapped in 8-32 I think Ordered the lowest rail from brownells, measured 3x and drilled it out. I like the 2x for elk. 45/70 stops them quick. If I change anything I’ll swap rails too. That’s a weaver and I have moved to pic on everything else. Might even get it a bit lower. Attached File I still needed a bit of stock rise so there is 3/4” of rise to get a good cheek weld. Plus the thing was battering my cheek, soft smack now. Anything but factory irons will have you coming off the stock a bit, at least with mine. Attached File Either of those linked rails look like an excellent option. |

Thanks guys! I only have just over 6" between the end of the receiver and the rear sight. I think I'll go with the 6" RPP rail and a cheap set of Amazon rings to see where I need to be, then later get the appropriate Leupold QDs. 👍 Amazon has the Leupold Rifleman rings for 25 bucks, they're probably not enough for this gun (1 top screw on each side) but it'll show me if everything fits and I can use them on a .22 afterwards. -edit |
