Alright, I just recieved my USGI 20 rounders in the mail. I love em so far, they feel indestructible and it's black

Stupid question tho, I can only fit 19 rounds in my mags. It's the same with my AR, just wondering if this is also natural?

man up and squeeze the last one in.... tap the back of the mag to seat the rds properly

Hahaha! You call me a girly man?!

Got it, didn't know I had to put pressure down on the round :P

Hemi-Cuda, that is abnormal.  You should be able to put twenty rounds in the magazine without trouble.  How many spot welds on the follower?

I put 19 in without trouble, the last one I have to force down pretty nicely.

Hmmmm, that doesn't sound right.

On a related subject...Armalite is once again selling M14 mags.

I had exactly the same problem.  And the mags were also black.  What a coincidence.  Anyway what I found out is that the mags were definately USGI but just as definately not new.  The fix was the spring.  Some Bubba had re-parked a bunch of mags, put new (extra power) springs in them and forged some makeshift USGI wrapper.  He was selling them as NOS Winchester mags.  I knew it was BS and the mags were not Winchester when the mag body was stamped BRW S-1.  Anyway the spring was too long and coil-stacked before the 20th round could be inserted.  Changed spring, took it to range and it worked.

Hrm, actually a question regarding my mags.

Does the W imprint signify Winchester?

If it's a real USGI "W" marking it stands for Westinghouse Electric.  However, that "W" in the photos looks like the fake "W" marked magazines I have.  My fake "W" marked magazines won't hold twenty rounds because the spring is angled off at a diagonal instead of straight down so it binds up and you can't get the twentieth round in.

Check the number of spot welds on your follower.  Are there two spot welds or three?  If there are two, it's a fake "GI" magazine.

Excuse the blatant idiocy, but whats a spot weld.

Remove the cartridges from the magazine.  Look for one, two or three circular impressions/depressions on the top surface of the follower.  The circular/oval impression/depression is a spot weld under the phosphate coating.

I can't see any to be honest with you. Are they located on the dummy round piece on the follower? Ill take a photo one second.

Hemi-Cuda, how many spot welds (dimples) are located right adjacent to the square hole (operating rod spring guide slot) on the front side of the magazine body?  One, two or three?

To the right of the hole I see 1 dimple at the top right and 1 dimple at the bottom right and 1 on the top left

Hemi-Cuda, you have a fake "GI" magazine.  It is not USGI contract made.

Fucking gay, this gun shop even said they were real USGI mags.......God damnit.....So do these suck?

The fake "W" magazines I have are not reliable for me.  The followers nose dive when in use causing failure to feed in my M1A rifles.  This is not with every round but even 1 out of 20 is unacceptable to me.  The same rifles have never ever had any problems with Chinese or real deal USGI magazines.

Also I can't open these .doc files from the website. Giving me errors about graphic conversions.

Yeah, I'm noticing that the front of the guide the nose stays buried. I'm going to chew these fuckers out tomorrow.

I just tried the link for the Pictorial M14 Magazine Identification Guide.  It's working for me.  Try single right click on the link, then Save Target As and select a folder to put in on your C: drive.  It's a zip file that should open up.  It's got over 200 color close up dirty detail photos of most M14 magazine brands.  elvis_is_dead was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful on this project.

It's not working for me, I downloaded the zip file and unpacked it, but the Doc files wont open. So will these mags be comlpete shit or should I still try it? I know it sounds like I'm babying my rifle, but I don't want to fuck with anything.

Give them a try.  Some folks replace the springs and followers to get them to work.

On the Magazine Guide, try from another computer if you have opportunity.  It's worth having a reference and the price is right, free.

Also Different, can you link me to where I can buy REAL USGI brand new mags? Also I'm 20 so that 21 + shit won't work for me.

I don't follow who will not sell to buyers under 21 since I'm over that age by a few years.

www.coledistributing.com for NIW USGI magazines.

Same here. I bought a few of the mystery "W" mags two years ago from a guy on eBay. I can only get nineteen rounds in no matter how hard I try.

I fired my M1A today with them, the fuckin BLOW. It's so tight the bolt cant even push the round into the chamber.

Dude...  All of us get burned once.  That's how we learn.  Sorry to hear about your mags  Let those guys know they are fake.  You never know the people you purchsed them from might not even know how to tell the difference.  I think you get alot more out of them with a cool head.

How are the mags from Armalite?  I ordered a few today, are they any good?
