I am thinking about buying a used 30-06 model 700. are the barrels diameter/thickness the same in the ADL and BDL models? I tend to shoot my deer rifles far more than the average deer hunter and want a solid barrel.

I've also looked at the Weatherby's as well.

Excellent choice for an all purpose hunting rifle.  The Remington Model 700's come in all sorts of configurations.   I have four of them.  Two have 22" barrels, one (in 7mm Mag) has a 24" barrel, and  the fourth, a Custom Shop .280 Remington, was ordered by me with 24" barrel.  All of these are sporter profile barrels the same as you are likely to see for "standard ADL or BDL rifles.  Of the ADL and BDL versions mentioned above, the barrel profile is identical between the two except for the length.

I have many other centerfire rifles of various manufacturers.  I don't think barrel diameter or thickness will make a rifle more or less "solid."  Heavy barreled rifles are just that . . . heavy.  Weight is no fun when you are lugging the rifle around all day or have to walk long distances with it.  But they tend to be more stable to hold on zero when shooting from a fixed bench rest, as with varmint shooting or long range targets.  Fat "bull barrel" type rifles tend to have the barrel heat up more slowly for long sessions of repeated shooting, like shooting at varmints, if the barrel is not free floated.  That could cause the rifle to change point of impact after it gets hot.  I doubt you would be doing that amount of high volume in a single day shooting with an '06.

Most Remington ADL and BDL rifles do not have free floated barrels.  There is an intentional pressure point out close to the end of the stock that pushes up on the barrel.  This is a good design and these rifles tend to be pretty accurate for hunting purposes without free floating them.

For most big game hunting, where you hunt all day for the chance to take one shot, maybe one follow up shot, the lighter weight of a 22" sporter barrel is better and for that kind of shooting where one shot from a cold barrel is all you are going to get, a heavy barrel is not going to be beneficial except again from a solid rest at very long distances.

Neither profile is going to result in shortening the life of your rifle or its barrel.

thanks for the info. I knew the length was different in the two, but I was under the impression that the BDL barrel was a thicker profiled and better quality barrel. one thing that I am seeing more and more often is that the barrels are thinner.

I shoot a lot of big rifles. 30-06 and 7 mag getting the bulk. I was debating building on a 700 action with a heavier weight barrel.

Most sporter profile barrels on ADL and BDL 700s are going to have identical 22" barrels. The magnums have the 24" barrels.  The only reason my Custom Shop 280 has a 24" barrel is because I ordered it specially built that way.

If you are a big game hunter, the sporter profile will serve you well.  No need to lug around the extra weight.

The differences between the ADL and BDL of same chambering is the stock and metal.  The ADL has a plain wood/stynthic stock compared to the BDL better finished wood/checkering.  The ADL also has a blind magazine where the BDL has a detachable metal floorplate.  Barrels are the same unless you have a specific different verison ie Alaskan, Mountain gun, etc.
