Local Fun Store near where I live opened their doors yesterday so I stopped by on the way home last night.  I have been itching to add a 308 to the safe and the FAL has caught my eye, just starting to educate myself on FAL so I am a total newbie.

Anyway they had one behind the counter and I asked to take a look.  On the left side of the lower receiver it was stamped IMBEL made in Brazil, which from what I have read so far in my research is a good thing.  The right side of the receiver was stamped CAIL assembled in Canada if memory serves me.

Outside of the barrel looked almost new, was unable to take a look down the bore, they did not have any bore lights, or a small flashlight.  The bolt had a what looked like a series of "z's" in kind of a cross hatch pattern, unsure what that was for?

Had the typical flash hider/muzzle brake, carry handle, action felt very smooth, the gas adjust did seem to move very easily, not sure if that is normal or not.  Other than that, from what little I could tell it appeared to be in decent shape.

What else should I be looking at/for?  Asking price was $850 which seems a little steep but I honestly have not looked at too many of them.

Thanks

Are you sure, it wasn't CAI, for Century Arms?
I haven't heard about Canadian imported FAL's with Brazilian Imbel recievers.

How much did they want for it? DSA FAL's go for $1200 plus. Century & Enterprise prices are $600-$700.

Sounds like a typical Century with an inch kit (Brit, Australian or a mix).  They can be good shooters, worth about $650-$750.  Some of them had problems, but they were mostly easy fixes.

Next time just hit the take-down lever on the rear left side of the lower receiver.  That'll let the upper pivot up from the lower and you can pull off the dust cover, pull out the bolt and carrier, and then you can look down the barrel.

Also look at the barrel stamps.  The best barrels are Steyr, IMHO.

Thanks guys.  I will hit the shop again soon and try to remember a little more detail.

I think they for dirt & sand. Those cuts are on the bolt carrier, and help keep the bolt from getting all jammed up from dirt & sand when dragging your rifle through that stuff. But I could be wrong, someone might be along to correct me on this.

I have CAI / Imbel L1A1. I paid about $650.00 in 1996. I got one of the good one's, mine is a great shooter. Every time I look at it, I always kick myself for not buying at least two of them!

But I would pay $800.00 for another one, or some other FAL type rifle without a whimper. Great weapons, and great history behind them!  But maybe offer to buy it for $780.00 in cash in hand, thats what I would try.
