Just picked up a TNVC PVS-14. It will spend most of its life helmet mounted. I'm looking for some advice on a which IR laser system to choose.
I have a few different rifle platforms, all AR style rifles (2 SBR's and a 16"), that I would like utilize for Night Hunting/Plinking. Longest yardage would most likely be 200ish yards. I'm having trouble distinguishing whether or not I need IR illumination built into the laser system. Am I better off just offsetting the laser with a IR light such as an X300V or Scout? What about the visible laser? I see the advantages to have the IR Laser and Visible laser zero be the same, but is it necessary? Not being made of money, I'd like to find something that swaps between rifle platforms fairly easily. It seems as though the I2 is the most affordable system but in doing so you need to give up a few features. In summary, any advice to a good system that will meet most of my needs and be relatively cost effective would be awesome! Thanks! |

DBAL I2 Ir/Ir is a good way to go. I usually have a separate white light on the gun as well.
OTAL IR with a M300V is probably the best for keeping a small package. A slaved vis. laser like on the CQBL would be helpful I imagine if you wanted to move the unit around on different guns. |

| Thanks for the help guys! Ill look into the CQBL. It does seem like the I2, A3 and ATPIAL-C devices are much more popular. Could anyone explain the advantages to the higher end systems? What am I getting for the extra money? How do the built in IR illuminators compare to a dedicated IR Light? Is it really worth it? Thanks again. |

The I2 single spectrum is the way to go if you are going to get an I2 model. Make sure you read and familiarize yourself with the manual and the zero'ing procedures before you do it, otherwise you will be chasing your zero until the sun comes up and you cannot see the beam anymore. Right now the ATPIAL-C is the best class1 laser available to civilians in my opinion, for a few reasons. Its ease of use, both zero'ing and manipulating the controls in the dark are much more intuitive than any of the Steiner lasers in its class. It has a laser based illuminator that gives off zero visible spectrum signature for folks who use it for home def, or duty use and the illuminator is zeroable. It actually no\BS works with surefire multi function switches, sometimes Steiner's have some issues. You are able to zero it without firing a shot and you can just co witness it to your Aimpoint or Eotech lower bore offset than the Steiner products I have never had a customer call me complaining that he/she was not happy with its performance, or that it was broken. I personally own 2 myself. A built in IR illuminator just makes it all in one package so you dont have to run a separate IR light on your rifle, That is why I will run a X300U visible spectrum light for visible spectrum work, and an ATPIAL with its laser based IR illuminator for IR light, and like I mentioned before there is no signature from a laser based system. That being said a an LED based illuminator like the one on the DBAL D2 outperforms the ATPIAL-C's but at a cost. There is a visible signature of the illuminator, the D2 isnt exactly streamlined or compact compared with the ATPIAL-C, and the D2 is a bit more $$$. Is it worth it, yes. There are going to be certain times where a laser with a built in illuminator is going to be a great option because you can zero your laser and then tweak the beam of the illuminator to surround the laser spot, giving you a great POI/POA reference and IR illumination around your target, you cannot tweak a SF light inside the mount so at extended ranges your laser might not be inside you IR beam. Keep in mind none of these illuminator we are talking about are "high" powered and at best they'll get you out to 150-175 yards on a good night. If money is not an option get both a vis/ir Surefire light and a ATPIAL-C and crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentation of their women.

I started with an OTAL, and recently upgraded to a DBAL I2 with IR laser and IR illuminator. I run a M300V on the rifle as well.
I wish I'd skipped the OTAL and gone straight to DBAL I2. The OTAL is an excellent laser, but I really enjoy the added laser IR illuminator on the DBAL. |

Awesome info guys. Thanks for all the advice. ATPIAL-C it is. Let the penny pinching begin, so I can save up for this bad boy.
Got my TNVC unit in last night. So amazing. My sleep schedule will never be the same.... One more question, Any recommendations on a good Bump Helmet, that wont break the bank ($200-300) and is actually in stock? The Ops Core Fast Base Jump looks sweet but 6-8 week wait time sucks. My PT-Bravo is a great starter unit to learn with the device, but I feel like ill be looking for a bit more comfort and rigidity soon. |

Thank you Sir. Also we have black and green OPS Jumps in stock, tan in 2-3 weeks and Multicam (dipped) in 5 weeks. |
