Rock, you're costing me money with this thread.  I have other orders in with Kailash.  The MK1 should be impressive.

I haven't had my HSI out for playtime yet, but I'm not sure the acid wash option is worth the cost.  It's already rubbing off from the kydex sheath.

Just got my Kailash Scourge.  It’s beyond amazing .
Here are the specs:
Spine : serrations
Sharpened back
Acid wash(Hamon)
Handle : Forest camo micarta full tang
Sheath : OD kydex
Heavy duty grind

Special thanks to @ROCK6 for starting that Kailash thread a couple of years ago , introducing me to these amazing hand made knives.

Also special thanks to Andrew at @kailashblades for the updates with pictures during the build and the amazing shipping process.

Just by looking at the knife and sheath, you can tell that each craftsman that touched this gave 110% to quality and detail.

Buy with confidence!

I should have took pictures! I did a couple hours of chopping with a half-dozen kukris.

HI Ang Khola
Khukuri House Panawal
Knives By Hand Survival Khukuri
Kalish Khukuris (thinner) HSI
Kalish Panawal
Condor's Heavy Duty and K-Tac kurkis

I still have a mess of trees down behind the house, so I did some "limbing" with them. All of the Nepalese khukuris were excellent. Most surprising was the thinner HSI which performed great and didn't wear my ass out. Both arms are hurting this morning! Even the thicker khukuris with their more convex profiles bit really well.

I like Condor's kukris, but their blade profiles just aren't as effective. They have potential, but all of the Nepalese made khukuris were superior and I think a lot of that is the heat-treatment with a harder edge and superior blade profiles.

I had to clean them off right after as they were all coated with sap. Some of you will likely be aghast as I have red-necked blued some of my blades. Most were getting a decent patina and I didn't want to polish them up, so they look "well-used" now

Pics to follow...Friday off and off to the range for a little training

That looks great!

I thought I had pictures accessible, but my 10.5" Modern Service Issue is exceptional. Fit and finish is flawless, and the handle is sublime. Very, very pleased with this khukuri. Its width is in-between my other (very thin) Kalish and my very thick HI Ang Kola. It's very, very well balanced and I'm really thinking this is the optimum size.

While it's not a Panawal design (full-flat tang), it is extremely well balanced. Pictures to eventually follow, but wow, very impressed with this Kalish MSI!

My Kailash blades are here!

The traditional one is a 9" Mini
Satin finish, steel hardware, rosewood handle (medium length), traditional sheath

Short one is a 6" Bhura
Polished blade, copper hardware, buffalo horn handle (small), brown Salyani sheath

I think the blades could have been polished a little more to remove some heavy grind marks maybe, but overall I think they are pretty nice.

Ordered 3/12, received 5/23.

You'll only find Himalayans on the secondary market now.  I bought 2 of the last ones Yangdu had back in the winter.

The finish on the Kailash is way ahead of HI.

The Kailash Khukuri, Historical Service Issue Khukuri.  Khukuri is the correct spelling and helps with the pronunciation.  I think we westerners have shorted it to kukri, but here is Kailash's explanation:

You may well have seen khukuri spelt a few different ways.
Within the knife community, the correct way to refer to these blades is a point of some contention. We refer to our knives as khukuris for a few reasons.
Firstly, it allows for the correct pronunciation of what is a Nepalese word. Khoo-koo-ree.
The "H" after the k signifies in Nepali that it as an aspirated constant, so should be pronounced a little bit harder that the second k. The terms khukri and kukri  both miss out on the second vowel sound and blend the whole word together.
We use this spelling because we are a predominately Nepalese run company. The only non-Nepali amongst us is our designer Andrew and even he has a bit of Nepalese under his belt.
In a way, the different spellings have over time acquired different meanings, with the Americanized spellings coming to refer more to westernized versions of the blade, from the recurved bowie type blades that go by the same name all the way to mass produced stamped machetes.
We are Nepalese people,  making Nepalese knives the Nepalese way.
So we spell it Khukuri.

I ordered the Historical Service Issue:  Kailash Historical Service Issue

Historical Service Issue - 11.5"
•Blade Finish:Satin
•Hardware:Steel
•Handle Material:Desert Camo Micarta Wrap $45
•Handle Length:Medium (4.75")
•Sheath:Traditional Dap
•Grind Type:Standard Grind

I ordered on 1 March, and they finished it on 3 April; shipping only took about 7-8 days…not bad at all.

They updated me with pictures with the process of forging, grinding, and the oil quench:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/v440/ROCK-6/Forging.jpg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds" target="_blank">https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/v440/ROCK-6/Forging.jpg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds

They do offer a custom Kydex sheath which is actually a good way to go if you want to use it more in the field and lashed to your pack.  What drew me the most was their micarta-wrapped handle option, something I really want to try out…it was worth it.  They offer different sizes for handles, from small (4.25"), to medium (4.75"), and large (5.25").  I ordered the medium and while I wear size 9.5 .mil gloves, the medium was bigger than my standard HI handles.  I'm sure the large would really fit anyone with gorilla hands. My sheath didn’t come with the traditional karda and chakmak (smaller accessory blades), but it also meant a thinner sheath, which I wanted.

This is the “stick-tang”, but as you’ll see, they’re not rat-tail size.  The Panawal design is the full tang khukuri and I have a couple.  They’re heavier and I’ve always found the smaller tangs balanced better and never had any concerns about being a weak-link. My oldest Himalayan Ang Khola khukuri with the buffalo horn handle has done a ton of hard chopping…zero issues.

This is a thinner blade than my others.  My buffalo-horn handled khukuri weighs 24.6oz, the Kalish khukuri Is only 17.6oz.  This is just a comparison of what I have as I know you can get the thicker blades as they have their own version of the Ang khola.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/v440/ROCK-6/20210512_104231.jpg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds" target="_blank">https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/v440/ROCK-6/20210512_104231.jpg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds

It feels really light in the hand and you can see the more drastic curve in the handle, which I found really locks your hand in without hindering movements.  The micarta wrap is excellent, tactile, and slightly larger in girth, which I like.

Fit and finish is excellent with one exception.  I ordered the “satin” blade finish, and I should have went with the polished finished; more of a preference than an issue.  I’ve just found the higher polished finishes are easier to maintain, it’s not about looks, just easy of maintenance.  The grinds are very symmetrical…better than some production blades I’ve seen.

As you can see, it’s a lighter, thinner khukuri.  It won’t be as good of a chopper as the thicker Ang Khola type khukuri, but I wanted a lighter version and didn’t care much for the typical Sirupate styles.  More intended for lighter, green vegetation and chopping small wood.  I did just a little chopping on some briars and smaller branches; very handy and maneuverable and less fatiguing than the shorter, thicker khukuri.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/v440/ROCK-6/20210512_104409.jpg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds" target="_blank">https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/v440/ROCK-6/20210512_104409.jpg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds

I will probably pick up another Kailash khukuri, but it will be with a polished blade and likely get a Kydex sheath option as well.  The price is reasonable for a traditional, hand-made, custom khukuri and the communications were awesome through the process.  Highly recommended if interested...

Look for any Panawal designs (full-flat tang). They're very responsive, so just said a message with wanting that design.

Balance is important and their is a difference. The nice thing about Kalish (at least for one of my kukris) is that the full flat tang is tapered, which gives you the added strength and doesn't disrupt the balance very much.

That's really cool and would be a great gift. It doesn't replace the original, but it's made like the original from the original place!

The only difference is the full tang. My dads had the Indian rosewood which I requested on this kukri.

Purpose of the Blade Notches on a Kukri Knife:

The small inward-facing cut at the base of a kukri blade — known as the cho, kaudi, or karda/chamak notch — is a distinctive feature with both practical and cultural significance.

Functional purposes:
•Fluid diversion: When slicing meat, vegetables, or other materials, the notch helps prevent blood, sap, or juice from running down the blade to the handle, which could make the grip slippery and compromise

•Hand safety: If the user’s grip slips during cutting, the notch acts as a physical stop, reducing the risk of fingers sliding onto the sharp edge

•Blade separation: In traditional Gurkha kukris, the notch marks the transition between the sharpened edge and the unsharpened ricasso (bolster), creating a clear functional boundary

•Tool integration: In some designs, the notch area aligns with the placement of the karda (small utility blade) and chamak (sharpening tool) inside the sheath

Symbolic and cultural meanings:
•Spiritual symbolism: In Nepal, the notch is sometimes interpreted as a Hindu fertility symbol or the footprint of a cow, reflecting sacred associations

•Cultural promise: Gurkhas traditionally swore not to use the kukri on women or children, and the notch is part of this symbolic identity

•Unique identifier: The notch is a distinctive trait of the kukri, setting it apart from other knives

In short, the kukri notch is more than an ornamental detail — it’s a multi-functional design element that enhances safety, utility, and cultural identity, making it a hallmark of the traditional Gurkha kukri.
