I have had alot of requests for how I do the copperhead pattern.  I had to do one today, so I took some pictures and here is how I do it.

First, apply your base coat of whatever you want and give it time to dry.  Now you tear some wide blue painter's take in long pieces and apply it to get the pattern you want.  One tip is that I use a black sharpie to draw a line on the edge of the tape I want to apply the black to.  It helps you make sure you have covered any holes with tape that you might have forgot to cover up when you first applied the tape and to make sure you airbrush the black in the right places.

Next, I use a detail airbrush to apply a small amount of black to the edge of the tape.  You can hold the airbrush farther out if you want more overspray to get farther from the edge of the tape.  If you dont have a detail airbrush, you can cover everything you dont want overspray on with tape and spray on the edge of the tape and get a cool shadow effect.

Before the tape is removed:

After tape is removed:

Now I use an airbrush with brown to fill in the area that the black oversprayed into.

The last step is to hold the airbrush about 6-8 inches off the gun and spray the brown to get an overspray effect on the areas I didnt fill in with solid brown and then put on a couple coats of clear.

Here is the final product:

Pretty easy huh?

Here are some other examples of the pattern.

It's a customer's rifle.  Right now it just has a detachable carry handle.

He told me that he plans to bring me a scope sometime.

Which brown are you using ?

The dark brown is desert brown with matte black mixed in.  Probably 2/3 desert brown and 1/3 black.

WOW...that was quick. I was one of the requestors. I wasn't expecting a how-to for several weeks. Thanks for the quick response. Now I just need to find the time to get it done.

Nice!

If you don't mind me asking, how much do you charge for a job like that on the AR? I woulld love to do one but just trying to figure out if it makes sense to buy equipment, screw it up, get angry and throw parts, etc or just send it out. I would be looking at a disassembled lower, flat top upper, rail, PRS stock, barrel, grip, mag, bipod, scope and rings.

You can feel free to IM me if you prefer.

Thanks
Eric

Nice job, I plan on doing something similar using gun kote. I have done some research on masking tape. Scotch masking tape 213 is a high temp version. I can use it in the oven as I apply the coats. Here is a link to another type of snake camo that I might blend both styles. Tell me what you think?

Can ya post some top and bottom pictures

Thanks for the tutorial!

I did my paintball gun and it turned out pretty good. I'm thinking about doing one of my long guns now.

What colors were used here?

I must admit I like the omission of the black, as it makes the pattern a bit more subtle...

I love this pattern. I'm looking for one with the netting on part of it. Do you have any pics or suggestions for one of those?

This is the one that I am talking about. It was done by 7.62 precision.

I used laundry garmet bag and first  layed it out flat and sprayed with spray paint so it was ridged. u can also leave it loose(non ridged) put it over the gun. make relief cuts as needed and then pull it tight with  sewing thread aroung the gun.
Heres another TIP   if your gun is parkerized or has that sandy finish DO NOT USE IT as your base coat for the black scales . The guns factory finish will suck the duracoat up and allow the paint to move under the net result in a big mess. you will need to spray a thin black base first then lay the net down and the go ti town on the stripe colors .  also duracoat wont stick rubber ie. butler creek scope covers without flexible primer adhesion promoter. also do it ALL at once my scope and shade  were done at different dates and  i couldnt get them to match up on the seam . Heres a pic of my Remington 700 .308 tactical.

That is:
1: A very very baddA** gun
2: My favorite incarnation of this pattern I've seen yet! Awesome!

It looks like a mean rattle snake was stretched out over the rifle, just sick!

here are some coupons I used while working out the pattern I wanted to use. They look rough since I didn't bake any of the layers and I used paper towel pieces to mask it with (I like the more jagged edge)

Here is a buck mark pistol I did the final on.

I'll try a rifle once I get some feedback on the maximum temp the plastics can take. I don't want to screw up a stock since I use KG Gunkote, and have to bake it.
If the temp isn't the full cure temp or greater, then I'll par-bake it, and then spray it with their stock kote clear (1209f).

Thank you for posting the how-to, It helped a lot. I'll post more here as I do them.
