Before I read 400 pages of how-to threads.... :)  I have a few basic questions.
I'm thinking about a homemade 7.62 can, but it would get used mainly on 5.56, and prefer it capable of handling full auto.

1) can anyone submit a Form 1 and make their own can, or need FFL 07?
2) can all components be purchased for assembly --or is there significant metal machining involved?  (I.e. its not really worth making if you don't have a metalworking shop.)
3) performance-wise, how would a budget "off the shelf component/1st build" can compare to an $800 name brand can? --This may be a tough one since most folks probably don't have dB measuring equipment...
4) is there a timeframe for form1 cans getting completed?  (I admit, I haven't read into form 1's yet!). In other words, if I submit a form1 now (i.e. before 41p affects everyone in a trust)- can I build the can next year?...in 3 years?

Anyone can submit a F1
Machining not required
Tone is a lot different than actual Db level
You don't need to complete it right away.

Why don't you look into an Econocan.?

Not really interested in the "oil filter" type of can (econocan).
Time to start my homework I suppose.

I think a 9" freeze plug can on a rifle is worthwhile but heavy. Not worth it for a pistol can unless you have machining skills. Too heavy.
