I have a Yugo M76 8mm Mauser that I'm wanting to add a swivel stud to it's bottom wooden handguard so that I can mount a Harris bipod of some flavor.  This is an experiment, and I have an extra set of handguards, so if I can't get it to work, no biggy.

I was looking at Midway's selection of swivel studs, and at 9 pages, I was a little overwhelmed.  Does anyone have a preferred method to do this or should I just mount a piece of 1913 rail and then get a rail mounted stud?  Not as lo-pro and I'd like to try to keep costs down.  Open to any other ideas to get the harris mounted as well, beside buying full rails (no thanks, too expensive for this experiment).  Thanks!

Generally speaking if there is room to do it, the best way is to get a stud that has a machine thread like 8-32 then get a T-nut of the same thread; looks like a washer with 4 spikes and a threaded center. You counterbore the inside of the handguard to accept the T-nut then thread the swivel stud in from the outside. If you use a wood screw type as pictured about, use some adhesive with it to prevent the wood from cracking.

All that being said, here's where you can run into a problem, if the stock is in contact with the barrel, adding the bipod can push on the stock & thus the barrel and cause you accuracy problems especially at longer ranges. Same reason it's not a good idea to attach a bipod on a barrel.  If you support closer to the receiver then you are generally ok, you might consider a pair of those shooter sticks if you're trying for long range accurate shots.
