Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I wasn't really too sure where to post this. I for some reason woke up almost a week ago with horrible ringing in my ear as well as the feeling of pressure in my ear. Though I am going to go to the doc because I hadn't been shooting prior to feeling this (as in I hadn't gone in the past few days), I'd like to get some GOOD muffs. I'm 23 and this ringing and pain SUCKS. I'm hoping to prevent future damage and am looking to spend between $100-200 on a nice piece of hearing protection. Please guide me as I know very little about electronic or quality hearing protection.

The impact sports work well, I have them and use them sometimes but I really like my peltor comtac II's.
The comtac's are a lot more expensive, probably not worth it for the average shooter. They have coms ability and are waterproof.
The impacts are a really good deal and do the job just fine. The only reason I have the comtacs is because uncle sam gave them to me for free.

Not sure what you normally use for earpro, but keep in mind that the electronic muffs don't offer any additional protection over a similar pair of non-electronic muffs. All they do is amplify sound up to the threshold, then clip or cut off. What they do allow is for you to wear ear plugs under the turned up muffs. The amplification lets you still hear the lower sounds, but you get the double protection of plugs and muffs for sounds above the threshold of the electronics.

Apologies if you knew this, wasn't obvious from your post.

I use MSA Sordin Supreme Pro-Xs over Surefire earplugs. It is an expensive setup but worth it IMO. The Sordins are sealed to protect against moisture which is what kills many electronic muffs.

I definitely like to go out and use my gear... as in get wet, muddy, and full of shit. I try to keep my gear in good condition and would hate to have some splash of water or excess condensation from hunting etc fudge up my $150 head phones so water proof would be a must... Darn... those MSA Sordin Supreme pro-x muffs aren't cheap... I'd like to stay under $200, though I suppose it really is a long term investment... I've got a loud ringing in my ear to remind me of that right now.

MSA Sordins or Peltoc Comtact IIs can be had new for around $245.
If you need to stay below $200 I'd look at the Peltor Tac 6's that you can pick up for around $80.

Hearing protection is very important. My Father suffered hearing loss in one ear during his time in the Navy from firing an M-16A1 inside the cargo hold of a C-130 without ear protection back in the early 70s.  His loss of hearing kept him from  becoming a pilot later on even though he attended AOCS later.
