If I didn't put this in the correct place please move.
I am currently in a history class and have to write a paper, subject is our choice I chose to do it on gun control. Do you all recommend any certain cites books ec... I have to cite my sources and they have to be valid. My teacher is kind of a lib so I want to be able to really back up my anti gun control stance.  I doing research on my own but I might miss something good.
Thanks for ur help.

You should narrow your topic down. What aspects of gun control are you writing about?

When you get into high school you should start doing your own research.

It's good preparation for college, if you decide to go to college one day.

National Rifle Association, Second Amendment Foundation, and the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.  each website has links to research to promote their agenda, between the three you should have plenty of information.  are you addressing gun control from a legal standpoint in the US, a global compare and contrast, a morality argument, etc?

i agree with a previous poster, you might consider limiting your debate to something like, "the legality of gun control in the United States," or "gun control around the globe; a comparison of gun laws in nations of the world," or "the effect of gun control on violent crime."

I approached it from a POV that gun control in the US was initially meant to keep guns out of the hands of blacks, and by default is meant to do the same nowadays.  Rich people can always get guns.  Gun laws only prevent poor, law abiding people from getting them.  That usually makes lib heads explode.

TWO WORDS - Kennesaw, Georgia.  This small city requires that every sane head of household possess a firearm with ammo.  Guess what?  Crime in the city is almost non existent.  link.  The link is to Wikipedia, but do not use that as your source for your paper.  Try Lexis Nexis or FindLaw.com.  I am in college and know what sources are acceptable and good.  So, good sources include .edu sites, associations/ industry organizations and some print materials (industry magazines, newspaper, etc.), and especially research/thesis documents posted online.  I realize that you may not have access to good resource places and websites to find research and thesis documents (colleges have the info.), but google can yield good info. if you narrow your search to prevalent objectives like certain laws, acts of congress, things of that nature.  Good Luck and check Kennesaw, GA.

This is very true and the reason for the 15th amendment southern fear of armed blacks and northern fear that unarmed blacks were simply klan targets created much of the gun right laws we have today.

There are a wealth of stats each skewed to favor the side of who ever funded the study.  Some cannot be ignored and are in favor of CCW, liberal issue of permits and murder rates in towns like DC, Chicagio, Detriot, and NY which have very strict laws.

For a HS paper avoid stats if at all possible they make you sound smart nut if you don't know the study or original numbers than they are worthless.

For a college paper include minimal stats to support your case and in a master level paper use the stats you need but be ready to defend them

Unfortunalty STats are not taught effectively in the public schools because they are just a highly effective way of shaping info.

Look into locations and time where firearms were illegal and used or imported in order to further great causes (Bloody Kansas, AIM movement, and Irish Riots in protest to the civil war draft, not to mention the revolutianry war)

As a junior in college who has been studying criminal justice for 5 years, including at the high school level, your paper is kind of broad, but being somewhat broad is ok if you are writing at the high school level. Based on my interpretation you writing about the history of gun control in the U.S. from post civil war right?
Look up the following:
Post civil war reconstruction civil rights of racial minorities- Many states passed laws that in a roundabout way made gun ownership illegal for African Americans. Such as how Tennessee prohibited ownership of any pistol except expensive Colt revolvers, which no one except the wealthy could afford.
NFA34- The first federal gun control law. Look up the rational and reasoning behind it.
Miller vs U.S.- A landmark U.S. supreme court case regarding the militia interpretation of the 2nd Amendment.
GCA68- The most significant federal gun control law. Be sure to research the context of why it was written. The sixties were quite radical and had several assassinations including the Kennedys and MLK.
Brady Background check law
Assault Weapons Ban of 94- Point out how the law was poorly written and how the firearms industry used loopholes to get around the ban. Look at the Bureau of Justice Statistics and compare the use of "assault weapons" before and after the ban in crimes.
The rise of the CCW movement- Look at what Marion Hammer started in Florida in the late 80s and as of now is in 48 states.
Heller vs DC- Look at the ramifications, it legitimized self-defense as a reason to allow firearms ownership.
McDonald vs Chicago- Applied the 2nd Amendment to the states through incorporation by the 14th amendment. Pretty much has the power to override any state law banning firearms.
Be careful if you have a liberal teacher. I've seen teachers rape students in the gradebook due to this. I've always found that it's easier to write a liberal paper rather than a conservative paper; being a conservative is hard.

I'll second what Gravity said…

Liberals are not swayed by "Logic".

No matter how persuasive your arguments, a Liberal will ignore all of it and go with their gut!

Why not, they feel they are superior to you and you are now their enemy for speaking contrary to their thinking.

Like the above, I would keep it to the facts and history, not social science where numbers and questions can be manipulated so many ways you can't tell anything.  This is what I would cover, if I were doing what you're doing, in this order:

1.  State constitutions with right to keep and bear arms sections in them, such as Pennsylvania, Virginia, and New Hampshire.  This provided precedent for the 2nd Amendment.  Note that some states didn't/don't have state RKBA constitutional protection, hence they have anti gun laws today (because of items #3 through #9), where states that do have it in the constitution don't.

2.  Bill of Rights added to Constitution

3.  Barron v. Baltimore, in 1833: Bill of Rights doesn't directly apply to the states but instead to the federal goverment.

4.  Black codes–– among other things, prohibiting blacks from owning guns

5.  Dred Scott v. Samford –– enumerated Constitutional rights and "privileges and immunities" which were due to citizens, but not slaves.  Important among these was right to bear arms, even elaborates as to why.

6. 14th Amendment–– applies Bill of Rights to the states AND demands equality under the law

7.  the Slaughterhouse Cases–– Destroys 14th Amendment, saying states have to respect rights of citizens of the US ONLY pertaining to their citizenship in the US, such as voting.  Matters concerning states and cities don't have to be treated equally at all, like business licenses, property, etc.

8.  US v. Cruikshank–– 2nd Amendment doesn't apply to the states b/c of Slaughterhouse Cases ruling

9.  Presser v. Illinois–– states can be as unfair about laws as they want, particularly gun laws.  Labor unions were disarmed against corporations with private armies whose purpose was to bully workers.  (This will rub a BIG sore spot as the anti gun left is usually aligned with labor unions, who oddly enough NEVER MENTION THIS.)

10. Jim Crow laws.  Among other things, concealed carry prohibitions: blacks carrying guns to defend themselves from lynching etc. if doing so openly could be arrested for "disturbing the peace", so they would want to conceal them so that was outlawed as well.  Note similarity to today in anti gun states.

11.  New York's Sullivan Act in 1911–– Jim Crow law against Italians, disarming them making them easier to be robbed by the Irish

12.  California's anti concealed carry law in 1924, with stated purpose to disarm Chinese and Latinos

13.  Attempt to repeal NY Sullivan Law in 1930 vetoed by FDR

14. National Firearms Act of 1934–– Jim Crow law taken to a higher level both with discriminatory tax and regulatory obstruction
           a.  Taxed MG at cost of $200 –– Note cost at that time of MG was, what were available, etc. and value of $200 in today's currency
           b.  Initially included handguns, but that was taken off––FDR wanted individuals disarmed like in NY
           c.  SBR and SBS–– why?
           d.  Inclusion of silencers taxed at $200: poor people were poaching deer to feed families in Depression––FDR wanted iron grip on food supply & prices
           e.  Paperwork and legal structure a purposeful impediment, exactly like Jim Crow literacy tests for voting:  disparity in education and information meant rich and educated could navigate it (e.g. could hire a lawyer), but average person could not.  Hence inclusions of trusts and corporations for NFA ownership entities.
           f.  Likely purposeful subjugation of 2nd Amendment purpose of right of the people to revolt against the government.  Economic turmoil and excessive government meddling and control would have likely eventually ended in revolution/civil war, so MG's, artillery etc. taken away from civilian population to make Army have absolute advantage.  Compare w/ Revolutionary War where private citizens with ships and cannons fought even handed against British.
          g.  Creation of ATF to employ Prohibition agents, giving them similar powers to enforce gun laws

15. US v. Miller–– FDR manipulated the court, defendant's representation quit and didn't file briefs or even appear in court, worst judge picked to write the decision b/c it was a foregone conclusion (See David Kopel's article on US v. Miller)––- and what the decision didn't actually say but has been interpreted to mean

16.  California's Mulford Act of 1967

17. Gun Control Act of 1968

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––-

That should give you enough to work with.  And there's nothing to dispute, all of that is objective fact.  No amount of being liberal can refute any of that, and it makes them look like a total dick if they try.   It works against the liberal bias towards being pro-minority, pro labor, pro lower class, etc. while giving them the opportunity to disavow gun control and be the good guy they claim they want to be...

if you're writing a college paper you should not be using internet sources unless it's a peer-reviewd, academic online journal, which you probably have to get through the library. Go to the library and ask the librarian for help. They should have access to academic journals and multiple, multiple other resources. Wikipedia and other internet websites are not useable sources

Oh, something to mention about US v. Cruikshank:  it allowed a racist sheriff and his deputies to get away with murdering over 100 black people on the basis that disarming them was OK b/c of the Slaughterhouse ruling.  Virtually all gun control laws in the US are based upon THAT.
