| Getting ready to order me an M1 from CMP. Can't decide on getting on getting one that has seen time in another countries hands, or suffer through the 90-120 day backorder and wait for one that has'nt. Anybody got any suggestions? |

The Greeks were real hard on their equipment. Unless you are getting a service grade or better, stay away from them. The Danish rackers are very poor as well. With the cost of parts going up, it isn't worth getting one that needs some work, get the best condition you can afford. |

Mail order from the CMP is pretty much luck-of-the-draw. Your best bet is to make a road trip and visit the North store in Ohio or the South store in Anniston. You'll be able to paruse the racks and pick out the rifles that you want. If you submit a mail order, you can place a note along with your order telling the CMP what you're looking for. They're pretty good about trying to accomodate requests. True, some of the rifles show hard use but there are diamonds in the rough. On my last trip to the south store two weeks ago, a buddy and I were able to pick out 13 rack grade rifles that gauged around 2 - 2 1/2 on the muzzle and throat, all with good finish on them. A lot of them had decent wood on them too, just covered with grime. I was even able to find a 5-digit rack grade (less wood) with lockbar sights and a VAR barrel! The service grade is your best bet, but I believe they are on backorder right now. Down at the south store the Greek HRA & SA correct grade rifles ($900) looked near-new. |
You don't have to take a registered course. There are other ways, like holding a C&R FFL. Two hours of paperwork and $30 and your done. |

Doesn't a DD-214 and membership in an affiliated gun club meet the requirements? If it does, can I simply walk in and complete the necessary paperwork and walk out with a rifle? I'm only 45 minutes form the Anniston store and have always wanted a CMP Garand or '03. Thanks |
