I asked a few weeks ago about some questions with heat treating cheap welding steel and I said I would post a pic of my first try when I got a chance to finish it.

The blade is from one of the cheap bars of steel you find at lowes and the handle is red oak with  pine dowel.    I know its not the best material but I learned a lot and plan on getting a piece of real steel soon to work on.

Thanks for taking a look.

EDIT––  for some reason I can't get the picture to load so here is the link.

Looks good. I used a file for my first but yours looks a lot better than mine did. Now, you need to buy some better stock and put your skills to work on some good steel.

Nothing wrong with it.  If it cuts it's a knife. being made form mild steel the edge won't last long but you learned something.   Keep at it and you will clean things up a bit little by little as you go along.  Now you get into heat treating, another world entirely.

That's a great first swing! Do you have any old files? Anneal those and use them for knives!

Thanks for all the encouragement guys, it really means a lot.

After doing this on a bench grinder I can see why the sticky recommends a belt sander.   I may have to keep my eyes open for a used one to grab.
