Howdy, I just got my first Garand this morning on the FedEx truck from Alabama.  When I first took it out of the box I heard something lightly rattle.  Thought nothing of it, maybe a spring, I don't know.    Upon disassembling at home for cleaning, a very small piece of thin metal shaped like a sharks dorsal fin fell out when I removed the receiver/barrel assembly from the stock.  The piece appears broken along the long bottom edge with a small notch on what would be the back bottom corner of the 'fin'.  Appears finish is slightly worn on the sides of the tip of the 'fin'.  The rifle appears to have a new operating rod assembly (all) installed, the finish is impeccable on it and no cosmoline.  I did not disassemble the rod assembly, I'm not that confident yet.  Any ideas where the little piece could have come from?  I have looked at all the pieces I can see and don't see anything that looks like it is broken and nothing from the online photos I find looks like it.  Could it be the end of the operating rod that goes into the spring?  Any ideas where I might look for a missing piece?  Sorry, no pictures, it is about 5/8" long from the rounded point to the broken edge and about 3/8" across the broken bottom, including the notch area.  About 1/16" thick.  I did not force anything on disassembling, it basically fell apart.  I think maybe it had been disassembled by CMP, most screws (sight, but plate, operating rod cap?) were loose.  Anyone know a Garand guru in Virginia, Alexandria area?
I'd like to learn more about the rifle first hand.  I only plan to sand down the stock and oil it.
Thanks for any help to this newbie.

It sounds like the Follower broke, just like mine did. It is a small piece that moves between the chambered rounds.

See #34A

I don't know how to fix it, I sent mine off to be completely rebuilt.

Photo added for clarification of broken part found.

I do not really know what I am looking for, but I can't see any broken edges on what is visible to me.  I guess it is time to tear into the operating rod assembly.  The follower looks realitively new, only worn on the very top edge, seems to go up and down fine.  Everything, to my limited WECSOG knowledge, seems to work properly with no binding.
Maybe CMP just didn't get this part out when they replaced the broken one, whatever it was.

That is part of the safety.  It came from the trigger group.  Remove your trigger group.  Ride the hammer forward.  Look for a peice that resembles the one you found; it will be on the oposite end of your safety switch (the tab with the hole in it in front of your trigger).  If you can't find it it's probably already in your hand!  That part of the lever grabs a part of the hammer; the part below it blocks the movement of the sear.

Take a pic of both sides of your trigger group and post the pic.

See #31 on Karsten's link.  It's the top of the safety.

You may need to contact the CMP and exchange trigger groups.

Take Care,

Tony

BINGO!!!  I can now see the broken end of the safety tang.  Thanks, I will e-mail CMP right away.
Hopefully it will be here before the furniture is finished.  Thanks again.

WHOOPEE!!!  I heard back from CMP and they are going to send me a new safety.  Because of the holiday, it could take a week.  That's all right, time to clean the wood.  Thanks Law483 for pointing me in the right direction.

Damn, I'm too slow.

When you said thin and shark finned shape I knew it was part of the safety.  It is not an uncommon part to break.  FYI Don't try to force the safety on an uncocked weapon or you'll make your new one just like the broken one you got.

Glad you got it sorted out before shooting it.  Your safety would be nothing more than a clicker decieving you.

The replacement safety came yesterday, earlier than they said, and I installed it.  Talk about customer service!!  No charge, their postage.
I have to press down on the hammer a slight amount to get the safety to engage.  This is with the trigger group out of the receiver.  Will it engage properly when reinstalled in the receiver?  I'm still refinishing the wood.  Does it just have to wear in a little?  A little stonework?
Everything else functions properly according to the instructions.  I followed all the removal/reinstall instructions on the CMP site.
