I just got all my paperwork ready to send in. What is the difference (or how much difference is there) between the "Field Grade" and "Service Grade" rifles? Yes, I know the obvious answer is "$100"  . So I'm asking about the comparison between the condition of the 2 grades. The descriptions on the CMP website are about the same, and I'm not an authority on Garands. Every time I see people post here about the rifles they just received, I see "it was nicer/better than I expected". Basically I just want a shooter, not a safe queen/collectible. I want one that I can just take out to shoot, and not worry about the value or collectibility. Funds are a little tight, but it's not often that I'm able to make a purchase, so if it's a substantial difference in condition or quality, I might spend the extra $100. If the difference is something simple like condition of the wood, etc, then I might save the $100. I am not at all picky on cosmetics, but I want something safe and mechanically sound. Muzzle/throat measurements look about the same in the descriptions. And how long are orders taking? It says 60-90 days on both grades. I'm moving in about 3 months, if delivery times are longer, I guess I would have to wait before I order...I'm hoping not. Thanks for any help. |
| The description pretty much sums it all up. If you dont think there is much difference maybe you better read it again. Condition of metal and barrel wear. There are good Field grades and most make good shooters but a Service Grade will be a better rifle. You know your budget, get the best rifle you can afford |
