I recently put togeather a G1 Fal on an Imbel receiver. This is the second one I've put togeather, this one with a new DSA barrel. The problem is that it will not extract more than an inch or two on firing. The cases seem VERY hard to extract/eject manually. So hard,in fact, that at one point, I was placing the butt on the deck, and Stepping on the charging handle to get the fired case out. (Yes I had the Mag out when I was doing this!) I used the same headspace gage on both weapons, and they seem to be spaced the same. The only difference I can see is that the gas adjustment ring seems a lot looser on the malfunctioning one. even with it all the way shut, it seems that a lot of gas can get around it. Do these gas nuts come in different sizes? Oh, and before you ask, I did make sure the valve was set for auto, not grenade. Thanks in advance, |

IIRC, the gas tubes on the G1's tend to be worn out and allow a lot of gas to escape. You may have to replace it with a new one. You should do a search over at The FAL Files forums Vulcan94 |

If it's an out of spec adjuster that would be an easy possibility to eliminate. Just swap it out with the one on the other gun that functions. I have never heard of that problem before though. Make sure the gas tube retaining pin is in place, and also check the gas piston for size. It should measure .430". That new DSA barrel.....did it come with a new gas block as well? Hopefully so. As Vulcan has already stated, G1's are notorious about leaks at the gas block/gas tube junction. Many people have had them that were so loose they would blow out when firing the weapon. If the tube is a loose fit try a new tube. If that doesn't tighen it up enough a new gas block is in order(if yours isn't already new). Lastly, you may have to open the gas port slightly. The stock gas port for a 21" barrel is .093"-.096". I have an Imbel I opened up to .106" to get it to function. Then I realized my new U.S. made gas piston was only .428". That's why the gun had cycling problems. I'm assuming that the bolt and carrier travel easily in the reciever and that the gas piston is straight and travels freely too. |

You probably have a gas leak somewhere. What is happening is that the rifle fires, partially extracts, but there is not enough gas to fully cycle the action, and the now expanded fired case is jammed back into the chamber by the bolt slamming forward. Close your gas setting a couple if notches. check to make sure the gas piston tube is screwed in tightly and the cross pin is in place. Check to make sure your gas piston head is at least .430. Make sure that the bolt carrier slides freely in the receiver with no binding. If you are using a scope mount receiver cover make sure the carrier is not coming in contact with it or rubbing in any manner. I hope these tips help. If not check FAL files, they are the real experts. |
On all my FAL's, even with my gas systems closed off, extracting a spent case from the chamber has never been this difficult. You have stated that the kit was a G-1, which leads me to believe that the chamber is worn out or pitted. Most of the cheap G-1 kits are sold for rock bottom prices due to the kits seeing heavy use. On a lot of kits that I have looked at, the barrels were not savable, and would need to be replaced. You can set the correct head space by the use of a locking shoulder, but if the chamber side walls are rough or very loose, the case may expanded way to much or could be binding on the pitted side walls. Before you installed the barrel, did you drop the headspace gauge into the barrel and check for side play, and what condition was the chamber? |
The Barrel is a new DSA. It came with the gas block installed. I haven't mic'd the piston, I'll check that. It does have a DSA scope mount dust cover, but the parts all seem to move smoothly, with no binding. Thanks for all the replies, I'll see what I can do. |
