I have a chance to trade for an STG58. I know nothing about FALs and need help putting a value on this gun. It was built by Arizona Response Systems on an Imbel (gear logo) receiver. The barrel has been cut down to 18" and it has an adjustable gas system. The forend has a very nice built in bipod. It was built years ago and has had maybe 40 rounds through it...it looks new except for a couple of scratches on the stock. The asking price is $1400. I also have the option of an M1A. It is in beautiful shape for $1200. I've wanted an M1A for a while now. I can only get one...which is the better deal? On another note...I will be trading for this, so the value is necessary to make sure things are equal.

That is a great question.  I have a couple FAL's and an M1A any this would be a tough decision.  ARS is right here in Phoenix (where I live) and I have seen many of his FAL builds, he makes top quality rifles.  Then there is the M1A the semi-auto version of the M14 US balltle rifle.  Depending on the exact build of each I'm betting the FAL you are looking at is lighter and with an 18" barrel it is going to be shorter too (unless the M1A is a Scout version).

Of course both shoot the same ammo.

If modified for accuracy the M1A can be made to be more accurate than the FAL, but in my opinion when used as a battle rifle was designed (with iron sights) the practical accuracy will be rather similar.  I would still give the accuracy vote to the M1A because of their superior iron sights.

For me I prefer the handling and balance of the FAL, but this is a personal thing.

$1400 seems a bit steep on the FAL but finish and features can account for hundreds of dollars.  ARS seldom builds FAL's anynmore (probably due to inexpensive parts kits are unavailable).  however you can get a DSA STG58 for less than that with your choice of barrels and for $1500 step up to the STG58 Para with the folding stock.

In the end it is going to be "Which one do you really want".   In these tough times make an offer and see if they want to deal, can't hurt but don't be upset if they are firm.

Unless there is something else special about the ARS gun the price is high at $1,400.  You can buy a current production DSA STG for under $1,000 if you order direct.  About 8-10 week wait and you will get a 1yr warranty too.  ARS is equal in quality to DSA if you can get the seller to come down to a more realistic price point.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will probably end up taking the M1A as I've always wanted one. They are both very nice rifles. This is the first FAL I've ever had a chance to play with. It feels really solid and I really like the built in bipod. Maybe I can find a way to "get both".
