If you want to talk alternate reality, how about 7.92 Kurz necked down to... something between .25 and 7mm. The US could have just adopted the 276 Pederson along with the original Garand and pre-empted the British 280 by a couple decades and a world war. Apply the 30-06 to 308 treatment to the 276 Pederson and you'd have a bit more powerful version of 6.8SPC. Another route to something very similar to the necked-down Kurz. Chamber the T44, T48 and AR10 in one of those cartridges and the AR10 wins. 50 years earlier than the route small arms development took. |
