I bought a used 870 last year, 12 ga. It's marked Remington 870.  It does not say Express, but did have the express style barrel retention. It also has the plastic trigger housing and MIM extractor. The serial begins with AB and ends with M. It does not have the ISS lock. Is this just an older express/pre lock and is it safe for mag loads?

Are there any markings on the barrel indicating chamber length?

2 3/4 or 3
3 12 with super mag receiver.
Guess that answers that.  The orig barrel was packed away. Replaced it with a 20in smooth bore with rifle sights.

Anytime a 870 serial number ends in (M) that designates it as a Magnum receiver no matter what else.

Thanks.  That's what I was looking for.

At some point the Express model got even cheaper......and they removed "Express Magnum" from the roll mark.

Hmm, just looked, even mine lacks the "Express", saying only Remington 870 Tactical. Good enough in my book.

The Remington Tactical models are all based on the Express.

Mine just says express. It has no dimples and the old style mag spring retainer. Also seems to have an alloy trigger group. How did this happen?
