I'm neither a knife enthusiast nor a steel snob, so my knife is stictly a GTFOM if I'm pinned on the ground. To that end I carry a Kabar TDI Investigator in an Armatus sheath at my weak hand(or should I say "my other weak hand") just off my belt buckle. Strictly a yank and shank proposition. It is imperceptibly concealed(as is my AIWB pistol) and can be drawn and employed through my t-shirt. I recently got a Colonel Blades NCO and am playing with that. It's definitely a superior design but it's a little too large for my needs. |

I was just at Blade HQ looking at fixed blade knives when this thread jumped out at me. Time to spend money again... Damn this place, anyhow.

First lets decide what your EDC actually means. Are you size or blade type (single/double edge) limited. Can you carry a 4 inch or longer blade? Four inches seems about the longest most guy can conceal carry. A 3" blade can be useful; but if youre really serious about a knife for fighting Id want something with at least a 4" blade. If you find an original Al Mar SERE fixed blade Id go for it. There are newer versions in 3 and 4 inches that are in the sub $200 range I like the AG Russell STING. Its a 3" double edge. Id try to find and original but CRKT makes a pretty good copy in the sub $100 range The real question is how much defensive do you want and how much offensive do you want. IF you really want a fighting knife, I like the original Cold Steel TANTO. Im not sure its still made OR the Trailmaster Bowie; but I suspect you want something smaller. For a purely defensive knife I really the the Clinch Pick from Shiveworks. it can be carried almost at 12:00 and has the sharpened edge on the "back" of the knife. Wrist is straight and locked. Small blade and that grip makes it very easy to get out in an entangled mess, even if someone is actively trying to impeed your draw. I think a lot of people forget the infight weapon access part of edc blades in reguards to sheath design, sheath positioning, size of blade etc. Accessing the knife and getting it into play is a massive part of the puzzle. Id spring for a darkstar clinch pick sheath. No excess kydex and you can get a full fighting grip while it's still sheathed. I see a lot of sheaths with too much kydex that force you to adjust your grip after it's out of the sheath. Proper sheath should be like a holster. We'd never buy a holster that didnt allow us to get a proper firing grip while still holstered. Tom gets it. He's an ecqc as well as many other class alumni. |

This is a bold statement that I fully approve of. I don’t think the sheath gets as much attention as the blade, but I see them as equally important; so much so that if I like a blade enough and the sheath is subpar, I’ll get a custom sheath for it. I’ve prioritized my access for my support hand, so if I can’t access my strong side handgun, I can at least get my knife into the fight. I have a Clinch Pick and it’s an underrated defensive knife design. It would be a dedicated defensive tool, which his why I don’t carry mine much and if you’re training any in-close contact drills, it’s pretty damn devastating. I only did a few drills from someone who said they did train with it and he also loved and practiced with karambit knives. If I ever see a steely eyed dude whip out a karambit and I’m not carrying a gun, I’m going to try and wear his ass out by having him chase my ass! ROCK6 |
