I just ordered a Medium Crye JPC simply because I liked the weight and the features , looking for some lightweight, semi affordable plates.  Any suggestions?  I'm currently leaning towards some AR500 Trauma plates but anyone else have experience with others?

What's your budget for plates?

You'd like something stand alone? (level III or IV?)

AR500 and lightweight doesn't go together though, the ceramics closest to steel in price aren't all that light either, but I think they're like 1lb-3lb lighter per plate. (something like that)

I got (2) targetman coated / curved / shooter's cut for under $200 I think it was. (somewhere right around $200 shipped) They are level III omega, they're steel. They're nice, he does a good job. They don't expire or crack, even though arf tells me that ceramics cracking is almost unheard of, it's still a plus to me.

For me, I don't need them for work or nothing, so more expensive, super light plates, though nice....aren't really needed. (I probably don't NEED armor at all, but it's nice to have some)

A few more details, and folks can help you easier, there are some deals on ceramic plates floating around out there, but I'm having trouble finding them again.....

Looking at these, for now?

Everything I've read says that plates are supposed to be more expensive so I'm a bit leery.  My budget has some wiggle room but I don't need the best plates on the market.  I'm getting plates for the same it seems you have.  Because they are nice to have.

If you want lightweight save up and get a pair of ceramics. Your JPC will probably weigh around 17 or 18lbs with just AR500 plates and no other gear on the carrier.

Those are a good price.

I THINK that has to do with the coating, and the lack of curvature. (looks like they have a thick coating option too)

If I was you, I would dig as deep as you can into the testing, and quality of spall mitigation (how effective different coatings are, and how thickly they're applied) because, even if you are hit right in the plate, the spall can kill you, or mess you up bad.

The reason I ended up with TM plates, was the all the available info (and videos) of these plates' testing, and how well his coating contains fragments. (his is super thick rhino liner)

There are folks making their own anti-spall coatings, from stuff like kevlar fabric, and fiberglass fabric and resin. But I don't know much about it's effectiveness. (youtube has some stuff on that)

**EDIT** did you see plouffedaddy's thread on the midwest guardians? **EDIT**

Lol, your post is completely contradictory. AR500 is far from lightweight. I paid $220/plate for lvl 4 and they're 6.7# ea

Find a pair of Protech TAP Gammas, Level IIIIC, but lighter than ESAPIs under 5lbs each, will stop both M193 and M855.

You will thank me.

I ordered mine from a vendor not from crye itself and it said they had them in stock on their sight.

As far as plate weight.  The one's I linked to earlier are only 7.5lbs not sure if that's heavy for plates or not.

There is a really good and detailed thread on self-coating AR500 plates on here somewhere, I recently cleaned out my subscriptions and my search-fu is weak.

Basically pick up a curved AR500 front plat, flat rear, and coat with Rhino liner and add in some layers of Kevlar between coats of Rhino liner.

You will be surprised how quickly a plate carrier gets heavy.

Can you say who the vendor was? I was thinking you can only order direct.

If you order from Crye Precision and are a nerd, maybe.

I got mine from them in about a week.

I don't understand ordering something from the manufacturer. They charge MSRP, absurd wait times, don't give a fuck about individual orders, and usually have bullshit shipping charges

I agree. Until recently I thought Crye stuff was only available direct. Most of my go-to retailers don't seem to carry it for some reason.

My Crye JPC showed up on Friday.  I'm pretty happy with it.  I maybe should have gotten a Large instead of Medium as the plates leave about an inch of space all around my chest (I'm 5' 9.5", 165lbs), open to penetration injuries.  However I'm not going into combat any time soon, so it's not a huge issue.  The Airlite Cumberbund is fairly easy to adjust in my opinion. The hardened plastic that runs through cumberbund are strong and form well around the edge of the body.  They do tend to get in the way slights while stringing through molle straps while attaching things. The durability of the shoulder straps should not be an issue.  They seem like a strong but flexible rubber like material.  The adjustments are extremely easy.  With it being a Crye product, the stitching and materials used are of top quality and the workmanship is precise.  The mag pouches retain mags well, with the bungie tabs in but they are not overly tight without the tabs which is fine by me.  The admin pouch has some flexible webbing inside that I'm using to hold extra pistol mags until I get order a pistol mag pouch.

I've decided on AR500 shooters cut plates as they seem to offer the most bang for your buck and will fill my needs nicely at a reasonable price.

So you are set on the AR500's? As stated earlier I would advise against choosing them if you want a light weight set up. Of course it is your choice.

Read this: Read Me!

I really doubt you need large plates.  It's all about minimizing risk while maintaining mobility, not complete coverage.

Are you sure about the plates or are you being cheap and deciding "good enough"???
