Fairly new to the whole radio thing and looking for advice and examples on setups. So if everyone could post a picture of your comm setup and what the pieces are that would be much appreciated. I am currently looking at the baofeng uv-5r and ways to get a good set up with a plate carrier. looking forward to see what everyone has.

I disagree, the UV5R is far better than any bubble pack FRS radio. It will also let people realize that they want extra features and help guide them to other products with an actual understanding of what they want and why. Plus, they make perfect hand outs.

Eh, I have a VX7 with a parasitic drain issue that's already been back to them once for a RX issue.  I'm ok with spending less than 1/10 of what I did on the VX7 for a beater/handout/extra radio (that, so far, hasn't had any issues).

I got the UV5R and a spare li-ion battery for about $32.  An aftermarket spare battery for my VX7 alone is $23.

Comms are the biggest pain in the ass as far as set up and space on gear........wires and shit everywhere, yould think in this day and age something small and wireless would be present.

The UV-B5 is a much better radio, comes stock with a very good antenna, has much better battery life and is approximately the same price with the same features.

Bluetooth has made it's way into the radio world.  Question is how many items do you want to deal with when it comes to recharging crap. And it's still quite costly.  IIRC it's about 10 times the cost of a standard UV-5R to set it up with a bluetooth handmic.

ANywho pic thread

Micro chest rig using a HSGI radio/admin pouch which has a BF-F8+ in it ran to a weather resistant handmic.  From the hand mic I either run the audio into my Howard Leights or run an earbud under my ear pro to get the same effect.  As for wires running all over.  It seems that no matter how much time you spend setting up and routing wires you will still find a way to get them hung up with your gear lol.

Pics below are with my Mayflower GenIV Chest Rig. When it comes of an goes on my Mayflower APC not much changes. With the setup below I have four different options of using my radio. 1) Remote Speaker Mic only 2) Remote Speaker Mic and Ear Piece 3) Remote Speaker Mic and Howard Leight Ear Pro 4) Peltor Comtac III. It is also important to note that I not only use the Baofeng, I also have a connection for my Motorola XPR 7550 (Company owned UHF Frequencies) and Peltor's.

I have the stubby antenna on the Baofeng in the pics. I have a Nagoya 771 that I am probably going to switch out for, much better performance. On the back of my APC I have a Harris Blade Antenna with a homebuilt antenna relocation kit. Not sure I like it, may try a different way of attaching the radio. It does not work well standalone on the Baofeng, the radio is too small and the antenna is huge with awkward connections.

Hope this helps.

Equipment
Baofeng BF-F9V2+ (Tri-Power)

3.5mm - 3.5mm cable for connecting the Remote Speaker Mic to a pair of Howard Leights
Peltor Comtac III Dual PTT

Whats the difference between yours and the uv-5r? is it worth the extra money to go with that one instead? I'm open to pretty much all suggestions im brand new to radios beyond the cheap walki talkies

Biggest difference is Tri-Power (1w, 5w and 8w) it is also just a newer generation of radio (UV-5R 1st gen, UV-5R 2nd gen, BF-F8+ 2nd gen, BF-F9+ 3rd gen). I did not see much difference from the UV-5R to the BF-F9+, my big thing was the increased power, I rarely need to go over 1w but if I need the power (range) it is nice to have the option. Tim Allen would like it.
