| My uncle is going to give me a Colt "New Service" revolver in 45 long colt. It is a nice hand me down and something different to add to my collection. I am curious as to how old this thing might be. Looking through one of my gun parts catalogs, it appeared to be a New Service revolver but thats about all I know about it. Any info would be greatly appreciated. |

If the New Service is fitted with black "plastic" grips, and the grips are original; to the gun, you have a very EARLY Colt. Up until the mid to late 1920's, Colt fitted their revolvers with black, hard rubber "Gutta Percha" grips. These have fancy moulded-in checkering and the "COLT" at the top. If your gun has these rubber grips, treat them gently. Over the years they've gotten brittle and can break easily. Also, they often shrink, so they may look like they weren't original to the gun. After the late 20's Colt changed to checkered walnut grips on revolvers. |

Thanks for the info guys!! I will get the actual serial number soon to find out exactly how old it is!! As for taking care of it... I had a guy comment on my AR15 last time I was at the range. He said I thought those were illegal in California....Where did you get it from? I replied they are illegal in California without a permit. He then went on to ask then how did you get it? I replied that I bought it around 10 years ago when they were legal. He thought it was a brand new gun! I told him all of my stuff is used at the range or in my safe! All of my stuff looks like this. So as for the COlt...It will be taken care of to the same level! Thanks Again |
