Were M1 Garands, M14's, and Thompsons chrome lined? Everyone seems to make a big deal if an AR isn't chrome lined, so now I'm wondering about other military rifles (and SMG's). Thanks.

Not sure about Thompsons, pretty sure the Garand was not, and the M-14 was chrome lined.

And as far as ARs/M-16s go, to me part of that is the small caliber. IMO I would be more worried about a non chromed .223 than a .30 caliber. Throat errosion is quicker with smaller calibers and chrome lining helps with that. Another point is that chromed bores are easier to clean. YMMV.

M14,M16 chromed yes. Corrosion and erosion resistance.

TTBOMK all M1 Carbine ammo was non corrosive primed.

Thanks, guys.

And yes, I know the reasons for chrome lining, but for civilian shooters who actually maintain their weapons like they're supposed to, I believe it isn't a "must have".

The M14 had a specific call out for chrome lining.  From what I understand, this was based on multiple issues encountered in the South Pacific Theater in WW II and likely other areas of combat.  None of the others had a call out for it...in fact, I am not sure the technology was developed at the time ( pre- 1950 ).

TOO: if I recall correctly there was a manufacturer call out for chrome lining in the AR15/M16 but it was nixed by either Macnamara's whiz kids or someone at Armalite.  Not exactly sure on that one/

Japanese Arisakas were chrome lined..  Althogh CL isn't necessary, I prefer it for a rifle/carbine I expect to put alot of rounds through or have for SHTF. For a precision rifle, non-CL or SS is my choice.
ETA–– Garands were not CL and I don't think Thompsons or M1 carbines were either. I seems we learned something from the Japanese as the spec. for service rifles after WW2 is CL bore/chamber.
ETA2–– I also don't know about the M14...I forget about them it seems..

I'm not for certain either but think it was the McNamara egg heads. I should have kept better notes when I started fooling with guns.

Well I learned something today.  I didn't think my issued (DRMO program) M14 was CL'd because it doesn't look like it and it doesn't clean up like my AR's or the other rifle I had with it.  I will have to pay better attention the next time I clean it.

I think it was McNamara and the Whiz Kids. I remember seeing that on Tales of the Gun when I was a kid. I've watched that particular episode soooo many times.
