I'm sure I'll get a lot of scrutiny for this question, but....
How many folks have helmets for bump protection and/or for "gadget" mounting (cameras, lights, NVG's, etc.)? And of those that have them, does anyone use any of the replica (airsoft) helmets that are out there on the market (Dragon Red premium FAST (Ops-Core replica), FMA EXF Bump (Team Wendy Exfil replica), to name a few)? I don't need ballistic protection, and also don't want to spend $200+ on a helmet either. Granted, I shouldn't put a price on head protection, but my wallet does! Just wondering if any of the aforementioned replica helmets still offer a decent amount of bump protection. I saw on a couple reviews that the Dragon Red helmet is made of 1/4" fiberglass. I know Pro-Tec makes some sub $100 helmets, but I'm not too fond of their designs. Plus, I like Ops-Core's and Team Wendy's style of helmets optional helmet covers. Thanks for any input, and don't hate me for using the "a" word! |

It sounds like you're buying one based on looks, otherwise you wouldn't have a problem with the pro-tec. Im not slamming you, just putting it out there so my advice makes sense. If you are buying based on looks, you will probably not use it as it will be uncomfortable. Some of the airsoft replicas will actually have a shroud with proper dimensions but are lined with hard foam, making them uncomfortable, and wont let you get the NVG close enough to your eye. Plus the suspension system will suck. If your on that budget, why not get the PT that's made for real use, and is comfortable if it you get one the that fits properly?
I wouldn't let asthetics dictate your gear, or it will most underperform from the start. I don't buy airsoft gear for two reasons. One, it is usually ripping of whomever they copied it off of. Secondly, Im not going to trust a $40 piece of Chinese plastic to secure $3500+ NODs. |

I ran various copies and air soft helmets, some for looks and some for bumb protection. The common theme I find in all of them is they are either one size fits all and one size does not fit all. Or they are not sized right. The other vary common thing is the padding and suspension systems. Most if not all have been lop sided or of poor quality sewn. Another big problem is that the velcro they use to secure the padding and in some cases suspension pieces has the worst glue ever. A little bit of heat and sweat and the padding and other parts start falling off.
I also got a mich plastic replica ones cause I wanted the protection without the weight. I then got a ops core dial style suspension system for it, it was made by the same person who made the helmet and made for that specific helmet and the holes were all off, I had to drill more holes. I picked up a Ops core helmet when I got my pvs14 and never looked back. I got to say I was scared to use a $250+ bump helmet as a bump helmet but it fits my head like a glove and is amazing with the pvs on top and other stuff I run. If you want looks and a simple bump helmet go for it but as it goes buy once cry once. With that said I also have a protec helmet that is 7+ years old and it is the only true non nvg bump helmet I rely on and got it cheaper than airsoft stuff I spent allot on knock offs when only 10% worked when I should of been spending it on the companies that designed it and designed it to work. Get what you pay for. |
