I removed the wooden stock from my 870 and now I'm installing a synthetic stock.

At the base of the receiver (under the wooden stock) there is a silver plate "Stock Bearing Plate" (#59).

The synthetic stock won't fit with this plate installed. Am I doing a bad thing if I don't install this plate with the synthetic stock?

Is there something I'm missing?

Thanks for your time.

Gene

Try installing your synthetic stock without it.

As long as it's good and tight, you should be fine.

I put the stock on with out the plate and it tightened up with no problem. All nice and snug.

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong.

Thanks,

I had the same issue. I believe the stock plate was originally designed before synthetic stocks came out.

Does anyone have a factory 870 with a synhetic stock that can verify if the stock plate comes with the synthetic stock? I usually buy used and haven't paid attention to  it.

I removed the plate when I installed a Speedfeed Stock on my Express that originally had the laminate stocks. No play=good to go.

It is there for WOOD stocks you DO NOT need it for synthetic stocks so do not worry. We learned about this in armorers class as I too was working on both wood stocks and synthetic stocks and thought to myself...ut oh....I am missing a part for my synthetic.

I was pretty sure it was only for the wood stock when I first tried to install the synthetic stock.

But since this is my first shotgun, I just wanted to make sure.

It's all together and looks great.

Now I need a 18" barrel and a mag extension.

What is the best set-up / combo for that? 18.5"  or 18" and which mag extension?

Thanks again guys,

Gene

Hey buddy, remember me?  I sold you the synthetic 870 stock.  You dont need the plate.  In fact my 870 (the one I removed the stock from) dont have the plate.  Hope this helps.

Take care.

Yes I do remember you.

The black stock looks great on there. Not that the nice new walnut stock was bad, it just wasn't "evil" enough....

I'm glad I found the thread about how to remove the fwd stock before I tried to jam some needle nose pliers in there.
