Just getting my feet wet with 40mm.

Anybody have any files to print normal M212 cases?  I understand there's some floating around as part of a larger file pack (projo and all), but have not seen it.

Also ran across this reference on r/40_mm from Washington County Guns, maybe @TreddBarton can chime in with more info.

I understand these will likely not be reusable (one shot at best), but I'm willing to put in the print time vs buying them.  Or possibly print out of stronger materials than PLA to see if it helps longevity.

Thanks in advance.  Feel free to PM me.

I"d buy the aluminum KAK ones.   They're reusable and should last a long time.  They're not inexpensive though.

Been out of stock for a while now, but they do work fantastic.

Bengles Bullets makes some really nice aluminum cases as well

Also out of stock, I'm also on the email list for him.  Love the 2 part design for loading blanks as well without breaking the seal of the projectile.

Thanks guys, understand the machined ones are a good option.

I’d still very much like to experiment with printed cases.  I’ve got the capability to print in some high strength exotic materials, so I’m gonna give it a go.

In the absence of a file, I’ve done up my own CAD of a M212. Printing it in a carbon fiber nylon right now - we’ll see how it comes out/holds up.

I’d say conservatively, I can print about 200x nylon cases for what I’d have to pay for 15x aluminum ones. And another three times that quantity if I can develop a design that functions for PLA.  So I’d say it’s worth a little tinkering…

Totally forgot...I have two of these i was going to test out last weekend. Did some of his 3d printed wire pull smoke rounds. First one worked great. Second one got stuck in the bore from fouling....as did the 3rd and 4th. At that point, I could not even chamber rounds. That got fouled much quicker than I thought it would.

Nice. I'm interested in your findings.  There would be a market if you can make one that can take 5-6 reloads.

A lot of the printed ones I have seen use an inner metal tube, usually so something readily available at hardware stores.

Are you rolling your own blanks for the charge?

There were a couple of guys at this year's Big Bore Blast that shot in the 40mm contest that had what looked like 3D printed shells.

I did not get to talk to them though.

Edit: rereading your post. Are you looking for shell designs that do not use additional hardware where the launch charge is inserted?

Op, yes you can print cases. They break.
Google “m212 stl” and see if yeggi can find anything
In the MILC file pack there is a case made with printed case heads epoxied to store bought tubing, I haven’t used those though, and that was to be used with the MILC chamber

It’s all on the sea

I've been rolling my own 37mm based on this. There is a metal piece at the core that I made on a lathe, but it can be swapped between cases if the case degrades. That piece vents through the sides rather than out the front. The problem with that is that printed plastic gets nailed with those jets, and it starts to flake out. The next iteration in my design will have a metal sleeve epoxied into that cavity in addition to the brass tube on the outside.

When they break, does that negatively affect launch pressure/velocity?  Or does the barrel seal it off enough to retain function, but the case just can’t be reused?

Correct, hoping to work something out that can function without any sort of insert for the a MILC-style hardware to house the launch blank.  The blank obviously would still need a burst disk.  But for the casing itself, print and go, so to speak. I’m hoping some higher strength filament might accomplish that.

My form 1 for the launcher is still pending, so I can’t test yet, unfortunately. I’ve got several materials to test already printed up. Fingers crossed.

What launching blank are you planning on using?

The hi-lo system developed for 40mm is the way it is for a reason. I don't really understand the physics behind it, I've just been copying someone else's homework. I can tell you that forgetting to install a new burst disk when you reload the cases leads to a comically under-performing shot. If you're trying to replicate the performance of the real thing, you'll probably need to replicate the design of the real thing.

For sure, still need the burst disk!  I'm only looking to replicate a M212 case using a standard launch blank with burst disk.  Building out a functional true Hi/Lo case is beyond my level of understanding/capability.

I'm using blanks from Bengles for the moment.  He seems to put out good stuff from what I've seen and I'm happy to give a forum member my business, even if they are a little more expensive than Boland.

Bengels are worth the extra price when it counts, I can't tell you how many boland blanks I have that have bad primers or need 3-4 strikes.  That's in a b&t gl06 that sets off everything else first time every time.
