First off - I DO NOT want to start a huge cluster of bashing. I would like some intelligent help on this purchase.

I want a 308 semi-auto. Was leaning toward a M1A/SOCOM II but have had some thoughts of an AR10. I have a nostalgic lean toward the M1A and already have a black rifle. I would go with a Springfield on the M1A side but have no clue on the AR platform.

What can I expect from each from reliability and accuracy?

Looking for a shooter that is accurate but fun, and no I can't afford both unless we take up a collection fund with wife approval.

Thanks in advance,

Charlie

i'll vote for the M1A, either a standard or match model, and learn how to use the irons,

not a big fan of the short/socom or whatever models,

i also have been thinking of a .308 AR, but that is low on the want list at this time,

buy a bunch of mags, a good scope mount if you really have to have one, but spend any extra $$$ on ammo and range time

M1A's are fantastic rifles,,,

I own and love the M1A. Can't go wrong with it and if you decide to do the EBR thing then you can buy any of a number of "Tacti-cool" stocks to help you along. That being said my next gun will be a POF P-308 which is a gas piston AR-10.

So your not sure if you would want a standard M1A or a SOCOM?  Well that makes your choice easy if you decide to go M1A.  I say go scout squad.  You can suppress the scout, where you cant the SOCOM.  It is shorter than the standard and IMHO easier to carry than the standard.  It is a great rifle.  My vote is go for the M1A, but get the scout.

Here is mine.  I took the scout scope mount off, I dont like that position for a scope and I am not an aimpoint fan.

Scout Squad...don't look back.  Though I do just fine with my STD.

M1A for reliability, AR-10 for an edge in accuracy. That being said the new POF 308 throws a monkey wrench in that statement, not sure what the cost will be, $2k+?

M1A for practicality, AR10 if you are competing.

Why not the M1A/SOCOM II?

Because people get sand in their manginas about 7.62x51 out of a 16inch barrel.

I have seen several guys using them at Appleseeds.  One ran perfectly.  The other had the front sight shear through after about a few hundred rounds.  Evidently, SA has been dealing with a batch of front sights that had a bad heat treat.

I like the longer M1As better.  The muzzle blast on the SOCOM is pretty harsh.

However, I have spent a lot of time shooting a DPMS AP4 308.  With its flash suppressor, there isn't nearly as much concussion, and it is quite pleasant to shoot.

Either one is a good choice.  Pick the one you like the best.  Like others have said, I give a slight reliability edge to the M1A/SOCOM II.  I give a huge accuracy edge to the .308 AR.

While there is a point to the lack of performance out of a 16" barrel, its not the reason I went with a scout.  I went with the scout because I can suppress it if I so desire to.  You can not do that with the SOCOM II or SOCOM 16.

As for the single reason I do not like the SOCOM II, I think the rail system is too heavy.  I (as in me) do not need those on my M1A, but if you like it buy it.  My friend has a SOCOM 16 and loves it.

I say AR10 type rifle.

Far easier to make accurate should you wish to down the road.  More modular, and more ergonomic.

Plus they tend to be a bit on the cheaper side for comparable features .

Doesn't RRA now make one that takes FAL mags?
