Anyone use a 1903 Springfield action as a base for a build?

just about everyone from 1920-1972 its pretty hard to find an unsportered one today.

the 1903 is a Mauser 98 action with a mag cut off.. it is very strong and similar to a mod 70 action.

my 2 cents If you have an unfucked action sell it and get a tapped, chromed, or jewled one on the cheap

I have a Remington 1903A3 sporter that I bought cheap a couple years back.  A real backwoods butcher job.  Cut off USGI barrel, Ground off rear sight.  Poor cold bluing job.
Thinking of saving the action and trashing the rest.
I was wondering if anyone else was in the same position at one point.

If it's already ruined, then it would make  a decent rifle to build off of. Tons of people did it.

If it was original or close enough that it could be saved, then   it would be horrifying to cut it up.

Tag, I have a "sporterized" one too

I bought a good, vintage 1917 Enfield (by Winchester) many years ago with the idea that someday I would use it as the basis of a good 416 Rigby or some such thing. Things being what they are now, I could get a CZ550 magnum action for less than the current value of the Enfield, so why bother. As a bonus, it actually shoots pretty well.

1903 and 1903A3 both make good sporters.  Below are my two.  Both purchased as sporters. I don't know for sure but I think that they were both done in the '60s.

1943 Smith Corona 03A3 (top)
1928 Springfield Armory 1903 (bottom)

I have one that will scare you. A 13XXX serial Rock Island that my great uncle brought back from WWI has a 1914 barrel, sometime in the 1920's he sporterized the stock, removed/lost the rear sight, and replaced it with a brazed on horse shoe nail with a hole drilled in it for a peep sight! I'll post a photo tonight. I thought about restoring it, but it is a family heirloom

Several years ago I picked up an 03-A3 that someone had started sporterizing. The stock was gone and the barrel was cut down to 16". It had a layer of rust on it that made it look deep red. It was missing the trigger and the bolt but I bought it for $40.00. Right after that my wife's grandfather passed away (the guy who really got me into guns) so I sent the 03-A3 to his favorite gunsmith to have it made into my idea of the ultimate North American big game gun.

Here it is. Since I needed a new barrel I had it chambered in 338-06 just to be different.

Since it had never been drilled and tapped for a scope I didn't want to be the one to do it so I had iron sights put on. Timney trigger, glass bedded custom black walnut stock and way too much money later and here we are.

THOSE are nice guys

hey OP if it is a really early 03 (check the serial number) the heat treatment was done at the wrong temp and the reciever should not be used check with someone with more knowledge, I THINK IT IS 30,000 OR LESS RANGE

If it's a Springfield, it's 800,000 or lower. Rock Islands are 286,506 or lower.

A thank you goes out to all who replied.  I plan the change the barrel.  I don't hunt, so will be a casual target range gun.  What is a good caliber?  Something a little easier on the shoulder than 30-06, flat shooting?

Staying with the 308 bolt face you can do 22-250.

If it's an original and still in GI configuration, you should be hanged if you bubbafy it.

Go get a Savage 10/110 or a Remington 700.

Yep, you are right.

He should only be shot then.
