dollars to donuts it's the spring that is directly behind the trigger- helps reset the trigger after firing. if the spring is gone then you are missing the stem\pin thingie that makes contact with the back of the trigger. if you had the trigger out of the trigger group housing they can fallout.
I've heard of people removing them to lessen trigger pull. I cut some of mine down and reinstalled to no ill effect. |

Mystery solved: It is an extra extractor spring that was supplied with the extractor I bought. I was trying to figure out where it went after I had already assembled the bolt, so that was the cause of the confusion.
It has a little more tension than the original so I went ahead and switched them out, not sure if it will make any difference. Thanks for the help. If nothing else, I now have a lot of practice taking her apart and reassembling.
