I'm not a big knife guy, my old man definately is - he's at blade right now...
I know enough about knives to know that when I'm at an estate/garage sale I should look for old carbon steel and I did just that today. I found a pretty antiquated KA-BAR stamped knife in the $0.25 bin, and the lady ended up giving it to me free. It had some pretty bad rust so I dunked it in the electrolysis tank for a few hours and now I can see what I have to work with. Sort of neat, but I didn't know KA-BAR made anything other than the fighting knives we had in the USMC. What gives? Has a neat pattern in the blade, unfortunately it's been sharpened plenty in its life. I was thinking of gettting it cleaned up and using it to cut bread

Interesting! 100% not and expert but....
At first glance it looks like it was a file at one time, then made into a knife. The marking tells me maybe not. If it was hand-stamped they did a good job with depth and letter spacing. Look here: Ka-Bar Stamps graphic Seventh column over, third down. That's the closest on the page. The 'tails' at the bottoms of the letters seems correct to that one, and I don't think any hand stamping set you can buy would have them.
