I've got a .30 cal SAS can and am very pleased with it.  I normally shoot it on my 20" barreled .308 FN PBR and an 18" .223 AR-15.  I've loaded some subsonic amo for the .308 using TrailBoss powder and 180gr bullets.

The only advantage i can see with a .300 Whisper rifle is that the scope is already diealed in for th eload, as opposed to having a scope set for standard load and haveing to hold over and twist turrets to hit dead on witht eh subsonic load.  Shooting a 180 (or 220 or 168) gr bullet at 1050 fps is going to have the same ballistics no matter if it's fired from a .300 Whisper or a .308, right?  Am I missing something?  I am a tinkerer and the thought of playing with those little cartridges and big bullets makes me smile, but when I look at my .308 and know I can easily shoot full power loads through teh smae rifle, it seems like the .300 Whisper is kind of a waste.

Please educate me.

Thanks,
Doug K

My thoughts as well. I can always load a dirt cheap 210gr cast GC bullet in my 30/30 or one of my larger capacity cartridges. The only benefit may be in the accuracy department, but at less than 100 yards accuracy isn't that big an issue, and at longer distance who cares if the shot is heard? JMOFWIW

OK, in the AR platform, I see some advantages, but when you are talking about spending $600 on an upper or another rifle how can you really call that efficient?

If you just want to shoot 180 grain subs out of a 308 bolt rifle then the 300x isn't for you. But if you want a 30 round magazine of 240 grain subs then the 300 BLK would be a better buy.

OK, so basically what I thought.  Platform for plaform, there's no big difference.  I wonder how tough it would be to take a semi .308 like an FAL  with a multi port gas system and open up one port for reliable cycling with sunsonic .308's.

I still think the littel .300 Whatever is a cool idea and eventually will probably go with one in an AR,   Any reccmendations on what to get?  I know that J&T sells complete carbine uppers and kits in .300 Whisper.  Worth it t wait awhile and see how the remington/AAC version works out?

Once you do that & want to fire full power rounds you'd be throwing A LOT of extra gas back at the cycling system.  I wanted to do the same thing with a G3 and ran into many problems.  For now because I wanted a semi auto subsonic that would handle super sonic - I have a 9mm AR in 10.5."  The 300 Blackout is next

I'd put my money on the Blackout. There don't seem to be any substantial differences between the variants, except that the AAC/Remington version is going to be SAAMI approved and have factory ammo available for it.

The ammo is already shipping, by the way. As per Allen Arms:

300BLK Super Sonic- MSRP $12.99 per 20 rd box
300BLK Sub Sonic- MSRP $21.99 per 20 rd box

Yep.  Rob pretty well nailed it.

From what I understand, the .300 Whisper was initially designed to feed and function suppressed within the AR15 / M16 platform at subsonic velocities.  This was to deliver greater muzzle energy than a subsonic 9mm in a subgun sized package.  It does this very well, but still suffers the limitations of any subsonic round.  With that being said, it is capable of shooting bullets much heavier than the 9mm.

The small case is very efficient for pushing heavy bullets at low velocities.  Minimal case volume also makes for more consistent shot-to-shot velocities than when you use a relatively large (for the application) case such as a .308.

Think of it as filling the MP5-SD niche, but delivering more energy in the process.  If you want a compact suppressed semi/full auto, the .300 Whisper and its derivatives give you more power than other comparable guns.

Now if you want something that is more flexible, a .308 bolt-action may be a better choice.  You have the option of heavy subsonic bullets, or light fast ones.  It's going to be less efficient, but that's not going to make that much difference.  You are somewhat limited in your bullet selection by the barrel twist rate, with most .308 barrels only able to shoot up to around 180 or possibly 200 gr. bullets.  Most (not all) .300 Whisper and derivatives use a faster 1:8 (or faster) twist barrel to allow for 240 gr. or heavier bullets.

Decide what your primary used is going to be and let that drive the decision of which platform to use.

Just build one yourself.  Everything is standardize AR15 parts cept for the barrel.  Noveske is building barrels.  And now ammo is being pumped out too!

I have an 8" upper in 300/221 /  300 whisper or whatever you want to call it.  I built my own.
parts are as follows:
a3 upper
larue 7.0 hg
bartlein tightbore barrel
adjustable gasblock from tp555 (quarterbore forums)
pistol length gas tube
SAS MB silencer mount

There is alot to be said for pushing a 240 SMK at 1050 fps at the muzzle .. and at 300 yards is still generating 975 fps!  You can still run supersonic loads in it and generate about 2400 fps with smaller bullets.  I use mine all the time and love it .. and take it deer hunting too!

I'm not trying to sell you on the round .. but if you can't or don't appreciate what it has to offer then its your loss.

I have two bolt gun suppressor host projects to be completed .. one is a 308 .. the other is a 300 whisper!

What kind of drop do you get with your set-up?  Playing with my subsonic .308 handloads, I'm getting a ton of drop just from 100 to my max range of 145 yards.  I'm not against the .300W... at all, just trying to figure out why I need one and would I shoot it as much or more than my FN PBR.

Thanks,
Doug K

You know, at 1000fps, there's going to be a lot of drop, like barely less than .22LR SV. With a 100yd setting you'll shoot over a hogs brain @50yd, and be a foot or more low @150yd, and over 3 feet low @200yd. Accuracy, however, can be excellent.
It's only less than .22 because those big heavy .308s don't slowdown.
I understand the .510 Whisper loses less than 100fps over 500yd, although low flying planes may be in danger.

Kind of what I figured.  Good for a set 100 yard range, but otherwise a laser range finder and a ballitistic table are a necessity!  Guess I'll just wait until I get a pistol can and run it on a 9mm AR!

.308 may be a tad big for that, though.

I did just that awhile ago.  180 gr RN over TB.  I'd have to go consult my logbook, but IIRC, there was a pretty good spread on velocity.  They shot roughly 1.5-2 moa @ 100 yds.  I never got to test their accuracy out any further.

why would I do that when I have the reamer and a lathe ??

ETA:  the PTG 300/221 reamer is dimensionally IDENTICAL to the 300 Blackout reamer.  Looked at one lately?  The "NEW" reamers from PTG have both the original 300/221 marking on them ... plus the 300 Blackout designation!

Aaron has my Remington 700 .223 right now turning it into a 16" 300 blk rifle.  S'posed to be done this week.  I can't wait to get that baby back and try her out.  I've got a box of 220 smk's loaded up to start with.  My purpose for the build was a nice little silent bolt gun for the local vermin population.  I'm sure down the road I'll end up with a 9" upper in the same caliber since it fits the AR platform so well.

Even with the massive drop (compared to most centerfire trajectories), in a dedicated rifle/scope combo with accurate dope, there shouldn't be any problem dropping small targets out to 300yds I would think, eh.

I haven't received the rifle back yet, so I can't give final approval of the work, but I will say that Aaron has been REALLY good to deal with.  And to boot, his prices are really reasonable.  He made it more economical to ship it across the country rather than have my local smith do it for me.  Besides, so far, he's been quite a bit "nicer" than my local smith who is kind of an old hunting codger (not always a bad thing...).  Just that somebody like Aaron gets the idea of this project more than somebody used to making 30-06 hunting rifles for guys he's known all his life.  I asked Aaron if he could make any kind of accuracy expectation or warranty and he said if it didn't shoot under an MOA, then send it back to him and he'd fix it.  Works for me.

Yeah, I told him I wanted to be sure it cycled with subs as well as be accurate.  He said he would test it with a suppressor for reliability and test it for accuracy....then went on to say if I wasn't happy, he'd pay return shipping and make it right for free.  How can you go wrong with that?

Sure.  That's "today's" advertising.  It makes sense to try and appeal to as broad of a prospective market base as possible.

15 years ago, it was being marketed as the replacement for (better than) the MP5-SD.

My thought is that a .308 bullet does not know what case its being propelled by , a 240 gr bullet doing 1050fps is a 240gr bullet doing1050fps. the big advantage to this type of calliber is case to powder ratio.  If you try and put 9 to 11 gr of slow burning pistol powder in your .300winmag you will most likely blow it up.... I was trying Trailboss in my .308 win and was able to get 180gr and 200gr bullets to shoot subsonic  (anything heavier was keyholing due to twistrate of barrel) but the problem was the powder just is not very consistant when it come to its burn rate so the Vel. and accuracy suffer.   I personally just enjoy firearms and like to tinker with them, working up a load and trying to tweek the accuracy from a gun is a challange.  A  rifle that shoots 2 or 3 inches at 50 yrds is just not of any intrest to me,  I like to try and get sub 1" at 100 yds out of evrything I keep........anyway just my 2cents      good luck

It would be a waste if you are indifferent about running it in a bolt action vs. AR.  It is fun to rip through 30 subsonic rounds onto steel at 50 yards.  Something about the impact sound being louder than the report from the gun does something for me.  I'm still new to this but have been loading up surplus pulled 175s over 8 grains of AA#9 as a cheap fun plinking round.  It cycles my SA carrier and standard carbine buffer.

Noveske 10.5" 300FB/BLK 1x8 dropped into an LMT MRP.  Barrel + conversion cost me about $500 and think that is fair price to run a new caliber in a new high end barrel.  I have been running my Nexus III 45 pistol can on it but am in the market for a 308 can.  Guess I will wait for SHOT before I make a decision.

Aaron emailed that my barrel finally came in yesterday and he was gonna get it put together.  Even though it's taken a little bit of time, I guess I don't really mind waiting a bit for a good value and good product.  Can't wait to get this thing put together; should be real fun on the local vermin population.    I love being able to drop a coyote or opossum while the girls a napping 25 feet away and not wake them up...  I guess it's the little things in life, eh.

As of now I'm planning on using a .308 can.  But I'm real interested to know if I could use either an Osprey45 or a Multimount on it (subsonic loads only) since either of those is considerably lighter than the Phantom 762.  I've already got a piston with the right threads and a spacer for the Osprey, hmmm....
