Got this ole Ithaca Model 37 DS Police Special off Gunbroker a few months ago. It was inexpensive and pretty much exactly what I want. It's a "newer" "old" 37 with a SN of MAG – 870042xxx and it did come without the two carrier screw locking screws. Took it out to the range and it shoots fine, but won't slam fire. When I try to slam fire the shotgun I wind up with a hammer down on a live round in the chamber. This isn't the end of the world for me, just know that the gun isn't working correctly and want it to. I don't know anything about how the Ithaca 37 works, any idea on a diagnosis?

Ithaca started making them like that as a liability thing, to prevent slamfiring. If you hold down the trigger while you pump the slide, the hammer will just follow the bolt home. Google it and you'll see a bunch of information on it. |

Slamfiring is a mechanical malfunction, so unless your gun is broken or severely worn it shouldn't slamfire. Earlier M37's lack a disconnecter, so the hammer will fall as soon as the bolt is locked. This, a "slamfire" is an inadvertent discharge due to (usually) a stuck firing pin or inertial pin. An M37 will not "slamfire" unless it's broken. What you want it do do, fire when the action is closed and the trigger is depressed, will only happen if the gun is old enough to not have a disconnector. I believe that Ithaca changed the design to a disconector design in 1973. |

Had one of the older Ithacas that would slam fire. You're not missing anything. Accuracy was minute of hillside. Safety was a concern to say the least. It's cool to play with once or twice but that's it. This. There is no tactical application for slam-firing anyways. Also, because of thier single action bar, slam-firing an Ithaca is asking for trouble IMO. You want to shoot fast? Get an auto-loader. Then you can shoot fast with one hand, from the hip...

It's because you actually have a Model 87, not a 37. I've got one too and it will not slamfire. Not all 87's have the disconnector. I know of at least one 87 that will fire when the action is closed (and trigger held back). ETA: No, this is not the typical "ARFCOM 87" we all know and love

This is the Ithaca web page. Try calling or e-mailing them. I found them very helpful. I'm sure they will know why your Ithaca does not or can not slam fire! I would like to know as well. Keep us posted,please! PITA45
