I recently bought a NIB Colt (my first Colt complete, BTW) and the trigger feels like it has gravel in it.  As I slowly squeeze, I can feel roughness in the trigger (it's not smooth to bang but kind of grabs).

Is this normal with Colts?  Can I smooth it out without lightening the pull too much?

shoot it for awhile, dry fire or live. it'll smooth out.

Put some moly grease on the engagement surfaces. You could lightly stone (hard arkansa) the engagement surfaces also. However I don't recommend this to anyone heavy handed because if too much is removed or the engagement angles are changed it could spell big trouble.

or you can remove the surface hardness and get a great trigger pull for about 100 rounds.

So this morning I read the replies and get the Colt out.  I sit down with my daughter to  watch cartoons, open the top up, put on a work glove and start firing the hammer into my hand then cocking it back.  Did this about 500 times, then CLP on q-tip and ran it over the catching surfaces in the FC group and did about 250 more 'dry firing'.  Much better now.  Not quite what my beater Oly is but not bad either.

thanks guys.

Do it just the way you have been, firing hammer into your hand, except pull up on the hammer while pulling the trigger - putting extra pressure on the sear/hammer mating surfaces.  10 or 20 times should do it.

I was skeptical when I first heard this, but tried it out on a new parts set and it worked very well.

Yeah, that's getting it much better.  Not as nice as my Oly howerver... nor my Bushy LPK I put in a RRA.  What's up with Colt having such a suck ass TP?  Do they make anything better to put in it?

Colt is with in spec and 100 times better than bushmaster stock triggers. Those are full of sand triggers.
