I discovered something interesting when testing the penetration of Russian 7.62x39mm API through wood. The incendiary mix in the front of the core would ignite on impact with the stacked boards, causing the projectile to become disrupted and tumble, reducing penetration to something like 4-6". Lead core and steel core ball would easily go through much more. I suspect something similar inspired the Yugos to put the incendiary in the rear. |
