| I understand the XM4 carbine was the model developed prior to the M4/M4A1 carbines. Would the XM4 have used the 2 position receiver extension with the Fiberlite stock or would the 4 position receiver extension with the waffle stock have been used or any combination of the above. Any insight would be extremely appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

Yeah I'm in the process of piecing together an XM4 clone.
I have a Colt A2 upper with feed ramps, M4 handguards, will be having a 14.5 M4 barrel reprofiled to the intermediate XM4 profile and will weld a spacer from Adco and an A2 flash hider for 16+ It seems like there is information out there suggesting either 2 or 4 position buffer tubes, I will probably end up picking up a Colt M4 marked lower from Brownells and running that with the 4 pos. I really want a Desert Ordnance XM4 marked lower and have had an ad in the EE looking for one, but no joy. |

The XM4 was not a fixed configuration, but a developmental weapon, so it went through a lot of changes before being finalized as the M4. If you're wanting to know what the "final" configuration was, then it should be a four position fibrite stock. Most "reported sightings" of the XM4 in operational units are COTS M16A2 Carbines, R0727s and R0777s mostly--the R0777s could have been marked "M4/M16A2E," leading to the "prototype M4" feel. Something to consider as well is that the M4 was not originally conceived of as a front-line combat rifle, but a weapon for support troops/enablers, etc., to have a small but handy version of the M16A2. This waffled back and forth as the project got kicked back and forth between the Army and the Marines, but in a lot of ways it ended up where it started, meanwhile, the SOF variant is/was the M4A1, and there's no indication that I've seen that there was ever an "XM4E1." I'd have to look it up exactly, but IIRC the M4 stock was designed at NSWC-Crane around 2002, and "adopted" shortly thereafter--however a lot of units that had already received M4s and M4A1s with fibrite stocks didn't necessarily get immediately upgraded--at the time M4s were being cranked out as quickly as possible, and "M4 spec" parts were actually somewhat more scarce that led in many ways to the "M4gery" movement, as well as companies like Bravo Company and LMT beginning to sell "milspec" uppers commercially to provide a better option than the commercial stuff that was available at the time. Point being, things like fibrite stocks weren't needlessly being replaced/upgraded, and things like the SOPMOD and MagPul and Vltor stocks were being used a lot of times anyways--for a time it wasn't unusual though to see SOF guys running around with beat to hell old M4A1s with fibrite stocks and CompM Aimpoints and TA01NSNs, while Guard and Reserve cats were showing up with shiny, brand spanking new M4s with CompM2s and TA31RCOs. ~Augee |

Looking good, which forward assist plunger are you looking for? Go into any SF team room and there's probably 6 different stocks on the guns (N1, Waffle, SOPMOD, MagPul and personnel)

My "parts bin leftovers" XM4
It has a silent sling w/100mph tape hanging from paracord on it now. I really like shooting/manipulating this one, it's light, handy, and simple. I'm looking for a 14.5/14.7 bbl for it. Under the fiberlite is a 4pos tube. Upper is from a SP2, purchased on the EE <$100.
