| I've been thinking about building a bolt action upper for my AR. I've seen these setups before and was thinking it would be more convenient for me to just build the upper for my ARs than it would be to build an entire traditional bolt action rifle. I've been wanting a more precision rifle than a standard AR. Can anyone recommend places I can price the parts to do this? Would appreciate any feedback, good and bad, on this idea. |

Bear Creek Arsenal sells a bolt action upper. You'd probably want to replace the barrel if you're looking for accuracy. I wouldn't count on using hand pressure instead of spring pressure to put the bolt into battery on an AR to make a measurable difference in accuracy. If you wanted to test it, you could ride the bolt into battery with the charging handle, and use the forward assist to fully close the bolt. That would pretty well simulate a bolt action. It might make sense to try before going all in on the upper. |

Part of what makes a bolt gun more accurate (or at least easier to shoot accurately) is a shorter lock time when the trigger is pulled. The AR design can be very accurate (sub MOA) with good components, optic, and ammo. What are you shooting now OP and what accuracy are you getting? |

I've built straight-pull bolt actions and ones with BCA's upper. While there are limits to the accuracy of the AR platform, using BCA's bolt action upper removes all use of the gas and buffer system, which means fewer failure points. True the receiver, either way. Get a good barrel and bolt. I've built straight pulls in .300 BLK, .350 Legend, and 6.5 Grendel. I've built BCA upper receiver bolt actions in .338 ARC and .375 SOCOM. The BCA upper can take a little tinkering to fine tune, but the better your bolt and barrel (extension and chamber, really) the less tinkering. The advantages of BCA's upper vs a straight-pull go beyond accuracy. Another big factor is it's also a lot easier to cycle than a straight pull, especially for hard to extract cartridges (like .458 S). |
