I’m building my first AR and have a question about the upper receiver. I’ve decided to go without a forward assist or an ejection port cover. I can’t seem to find many choices though. So far I’ve only found the Vltor MUR-1A, which is offered without a forward assist, but with the ejection port cover. I can live with an upper that has ejection port cover mounting brackets since I can choose not to install the cover, but I would really like to forgo the forward assist.

Does anybody know of other manufacturers that make uppers without a forward assist?

Serious question. Why?
I can think of quite a few positives to having those two things.. But no real negative's.
just curious on how you came to that decision....

edit: spelling.

I’ve read about a type of shooting competition called 3 gun. I checked out events on Youtube and it looks like something I’d like to do. So I thought it would be fun building a gun to use specifically for that type of competition. I’m not going to go crazy with the build and put every single piece of equipment the serious competitors are using. I still have to bring my skill set up for that type of competition. But I’d still like to start off with a gun that has some of the basic features that would make it easier to use for that purpose

From what I’ve read so far, it’s good to eliminate features that are not needed to make the gun lighter. So the forward assist and ejection port cover are things it can do without.

I've also read that it’s better to “Run what ya brung” when one first starts out. Then once your skills get better, customize for what works best for you. But since I’m starting from scratch, I figured I’d build a basic gun configured for that type of use. Then customize further as needed.

Thanks for the link to the DPMS upper. I noticed that one does not have a case deflector. I guess I should have been more specific about what I’m looking for in a stripped upper. Since I’m a left handed shooter, a case deflector is important to me, as well as Flat-Top Picatinny Rail. I would like one with no brackets for an ejection port cover, but that’s not a show stopper.

I know Stag arms makes an upper with a left handed ejection port, but then I think I have to get a left handed bolt carrier group. I don’t want to go that route since carrier group choices will be limited if I decide to change out that in the future.

If the Aero upper meets your requirements, leave off the port cover.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Uppers from Black Sheep Tactical and Aero Precision are good alternatives. I noticed that different grades of aluminum is used by the different manufacturers. The Aero Precision unit is made out of 7075 T6 aluminum and the one from Black Sheep uses 6061 T6 aluminum. I looked up the different aluminum alloys and just going by the numbers, it seems the one from Aero Precision would be the way to go since 7075 T6 is a harder aluminum alloy than 6061 T6. Would I be right in my assumption or am I just splitting hairs?

splitting hairs...IMO.  Either will do the job.

huh, I didn't realize that's what the 3gun guys were running.
makes sense I suppose, even though those parts are very light, every ounce counts.
good luck OP.
