I recently built my first AR and I've been having trouble with the Rock River Arms Two Stage Match trigger I put in it. The only time the trigger releases the hammer is when pulling with left to right pressure (i'm a righty, so pulling away from me) and backwards. If I try to pull the trigger backwards in the typical way, it won't budge - no release of the disconnector or hammer. There is right to left side play in the trigger, so possibly that's part of the issue?

I'm hoping someone can give me advice on how to correct this as it is not something I've seen other people encountering online. Thanks!

Can you provide any information as to what brand and model of lower receiver?  Make sure you have the correct springs on the hammer, and trigger.  Also make sure you have the correct pins in the hammer & trigger.

Lets start by receivers.
Most receivers use a .154" pins, while some of the older Colts used .174" pins instead
Hence in these older colt receivers, the receiver channels where drilled for the .174" pin, and you had to not  only use the .174" pins, but a FCG that set up for the .174" pins as well.  So if you have a older Colt receiver that has the .174" pin channel in it, then either see if who you picked up the RRA FCG will swap it for a  RRA NM FCG Colt large pin, or get RRA on the phone to see if they will swap it for you (including the correct .174" pins needed as well).

Next lets touch back on some after market pistol grips.
Here, the problem is the distance of the pistol grip bolt is way too short, and even with a pistol grip washer installed on the bolt, the tip of the bolt ends up protruding too far up in the receiver channel, and in fact will end so far protruding into the lower receiver cavity void that will block the back of the trigger from being able to come back down to it normal at rest position.   Short version here, if you are using a after market pistol grip, then dry fit it install with just the grip and bolt and washer, and make sure that the tip of the bolt is below the top of the channel in the receiver for it.  If needed, you can add a second washer to the bolt, or just shorten the end of the bolt the few needed threads isntead.
Note, some time the selector spring channel in the grip is all wrong as well, so if you are having a problem with the selector binding up (spring coil bound up since the channel is not deep enough), or the selector detent not engaging the selector firmly (channel too deep for the spring), there are ways to correct such as well.

Now lets take a look at the springs, and how they should be installed.
Granted that is a standard FCG in the first photo, but close enough to see the orientation of the spring.

RRA NM two stage standard .154" trigger group.

Note,RRA NM two stage colt large pin .174" kit, is model number AR0093NMKS

As for the RRA NM FCG, all you should really need to check on it, it to first dry the pins in the parts to make sure that the trigger can rotate freely on the trigger pin with about only .001" of play to the FCG, and should fit snugly in the upper receiver channels without having to be hammered into the place, the disconnector is moving freely on its pin against the retained disco spring/not biding up in it slot, and when you go to install the FCG in the lower receiver, that you CLP lube the parts, including the pins and channels as well.
Note, on some strange receivers, they inside width of the receiver cavity is too narrow or too shallow, so make sure that the sides of the hammer and trigger are not binding on the sides of the receivers when installed, and that with the hammer cocked back, you can move the selector into the safe potion.

As for the other odds and end spring and pins, this link should cover that install,

To sum it up, with the side play in the trigger now, does sound like the wrong size pin FCG is in play instead.
Could be that you have a small pin trigger group installed in a colt large pin receiver, and here the dead give away will be the the pins at like BB's in a box car in the lower receiver pin channels.  Or that you have a small pin receiver and a .174" FCG in play instead (the pins that came with the FCG did not fit the receiver, so you used your old FCG .154" pin with the .174" FCG and now the FCG is like a BB's in a box car against the pins instead).
Either way, with all the slop, it the FCG will not work correctly instead.
