You can get the rear hand guard cap from Ken Drasen ([email protected])
at:

Hay River
PO Box 176
Almena Wi 54805
(715)357-6054

Price is $10.00 for rear triangular cap and $29 for fat carbine gas tube plus shipping. UPS ground anywhere in US is $5.00.

I got this email from Jon at Jon at   [email protected]

It's just a handguard cap.  The short version of the instructions is that you whack down a set of A1 handguards, use a rifle (triangular) front handguard cap and that's about all there is to it.  A belt sander really helps.

You'll need to remove the flash supressor and front sight to install a rifle cap on a carbine.  While you have the sight of you can slip the rear cap on. The critical distance to use for your handguards is the distance from the inside of the front handguard cap to the barrel nut.  The A1 handguards will rest on, but not surroud the barrel nut.  Look at a set of normal handguards (A1, A2 or carbine) and you'll see that they encircle the barrel nut and usually have a couple of high spots that interlock with the barrel nut to prevent rotation.  This handguard setup will rely on the front cap to not turn.  I may have trimmed mine a few thousandths too short as they have picked up just a little fore and aft play, but not very much.  I also got a ratty cracked set of handguards to hack down for my first try and I'm glad I did.

My handguards and gas tube are set up on my M16.  I was blasting the hell out of it just a few hours ago.  You can get these handguards hot, but they cool down pretty fast.  The fat gas tube and M4 H-Buffer really slow down the cyclic rate.  I can dump a 30 round mag into a pie plate at 20 yards and keep all but one or two rounds on it.  This thing is now as controllable as an MP5.
If you're setting up a semi-auto, I'd still say get the gas tube and a heavy buffer as it will lessen the recoil impulse quite a bit.

The triangular handguards I received from Hay River were made to fit the carbine and didn't need to be cut of have the handguard cap changed. Seems they were around $40

Mine were on the upper when I bought it (along with the fat gas tube). The gentleman who built the upper gave me the same contact info for Hay River (Ken Drasen) as OP4 posted above.

So does Hay River also sell pre-cut A1 handguards?

Yup. IIRC $40 sounds about right.

Give Ken a call -- he's a really nice guy and he takes the time to explain everything on the phone.

I contacted CMMG and asked'

"I understand that you occaisonally stock the A1 style triangular handguards that are carbine/M4  length.   Do you have any now?"

His reply;

"I can probably turn up  a set.  They typically bring $80-90 on auction.  LMK if you would be interested in a set at this price and I will see if I can get a set lacated."

I hope that Hays River can get them to us for $40, otherwise I'm out!
