Ive got a project in mind for a SMG of sorts. It will use an AR grip but not a AR lower. Ive been looking at grips and grip angles for SMGs. The UZI and M10 (Mac10) have 90 degree grips. Thompson and M3 (greasegun) and MAT 49 and Sterlings have various angles. For you WW2 fans the Type 1 FG42 had a sharply angled grip to simulate holding a K98 rifle; while the Type 2 had a straighter angle. I get that intended use has a lot to do with the preferred angle. Shooting from a bipod/prone makes a grip more like 90 degrees "feel" better; and a standing shoulder fired position means a angled grip is more comfortable. I say that but when I fire my UZI and M10 from a standing shoulder position OR from the "Hip"; I never noticed anything uncomfortable or unusable. I dont like finger grooves. I can live with the single groove on the A2 grip. Id prefer a grip with the "beavertail". Nothing skeletonized. Rubber maybe? I sorta like the Ergo grip as it feels early HK MP5-esque. Whats your grip choice for a gun that might be fired one handed but mostly two handed from the shoulder and possibly from the hip? Next we'll talk about front grips MP5K or something else? Stubby or full size? |

I prefer 17° or less and beavertail. My precision ar has an ati x2 (17°?) that has a really thick beavertail that keeps your hand a bit lower and perfectly aligns the trigger finger with the trigger. Super, super comfy grip. General purpose builds have bcm gunfighter mod 3 grips (17°). They are fine as is. If i had to nitpick, i would like better/more texturing all over. I've just been too lazy to stiple them, because, well, they're fine as is. My shorties have magpul k2xl grips (11°). These are big grips, so if your hands are on the smaller size, they might be too much. But if you have large hands, they're great at about everything. Can easily one hand them. Now that nearly everyone in the family has their own ar builds, I really need to get a few more to replace my bcm mod 3s. Grips I've used and don't like are the original ergo rigid grip (25°) and mft's gen 1 version of the magpul k2 (15°). The ergo was what i thought wanted on my precision build, but still too thin and the shape and angle were not right. The mft/magpul is just way too short for me. As for vfgs, always stubby, and try to get direct attachment (as in, if you have an mlok rail, don't add a picatinny section and then a picatinny foregrip to that section, just get an mlok foregrip to begin with). I only use arisaka vfgs. They're just the right size to use them however you wish. But really, as long as you don't go full broom handle or gimmicky, about any company's will do. |
