Besides that I had on thin nylon running pants, a tshirt and a hoodie on. Normal weight socks and my running shoes. If you currently spend any amount of time outside you should be fine. Is only a 5k. |

On the mtb ive been hot af with just a synthetic base layer with a light summer rain jacket over top down to 30°. Obviously tjats warmer than what you're about to deal with, but wind chill and crap. Its just a light Columbia shell type. Out side of gear, cold training applies just as much as heat training. |

10k through the hills around Hopkinsville KY on Sunday. The movement wasn’t too difficult, I still get a little brain fog on the stages with limited direction, but the cold was something else. It was about 15 degrees when I stepped off the Legion Run & Gun. I had a rifle double feed on one stage, otherwise my gear ran great. Carbine gas is a little more forgiving in the cold. Man, Legion was a good time--especially the stage where you were taken hostage! Temps were....Well, they made you question whether or not you really wanted to be there. I think it was 7* at the safety brief. I felt terrible for the ROs who had to be out there all day. I always do terrible at Legion--mostly because I have the memory of a goldfish and fail at the intel. So this year I thought--why not take some kit that I don't usually use for a run and gun, since I'm not worried about my finish standing. So I ran Legion this year with an HK MR762 with a Dead Air Sandman can on it. A battle rifle, 200 rounds of 7.62 and 180ish of 9mm is heavy! Layers for running in the cold was the ticket. A couple layers of thin merino wool with a windbreaker worked pretty well. Handwarmers stuffed down into gloves kept my hands warm. I thought I'd be smart and take a phone for the intel gathering this year (instead of writing it down on the map), but the cold sapped my iPhone battery immediately, and it died before the second intel site. My GoPro batteries died as well, I guess due to the cold. Good times, and Legion is for a great cause! Next up, OED Reveille! |

I wore fleece gloves to run, and stuck a hand warmer in each one. I took my gloves off during the stage brief and shot without gloves. Except for the 2 stages I forgot to take them off. I don't shoot in gloves very often, and it wasn't comfortable. Especially with the hand warmer in my palm. :) I got the intel bonus correct, which saved me a 20 minute runtime penalty. That's huge on a 2 hour+ run. And I always thought western KY was flat, but they found all the hills for this one. None of them very steep, but plenty of uphill hiking for a 10K. |

Put it at the top of the hill so you’re smoked already when you show up, and make them do the medical admin stuff properly instead of fast. As a shooting stage, scored as a shooting stage, I didn’t like it. |

I figure at 51 years old it's more of a Run (tactical sashay) and Gun. There are sections that I'll run but after ending up in a walking boot after an event I'm more careful. The ankles and knees don't recover as quickly. The best part is taking all this stuff I have and using it in as close to real world conditions as I can. Work on your friends. All of mine that I have convinced to join me thanked me after for keeping on them about it. If nothing else it's a great day outdoors shooting with your friends in a new environment. You get to see some really talented folks and some cool gear while sorting out what works and what doesn't. |

Top 15 out of 73 at team RNG @ Sawmill. Not bad for 2 guys over 40. This includes 7.5 minutes extra running because I made a wrong turn despite my partners protests. This was our first team RNG and it was very fun. My buddy and I had a few spats along the way - mistakes were made, some yelling at each other, but our friendship survived |

Holy cow OED Reveille was a lot of fun! Anyone else here? 7 stages, I think about 7 miles, and lots of wind and blowing dust. A good long low-crawl at stage 1 to make sure all of your gear was covered in dirt. I kicked a cactus running into a shooting position on stage 4 and jabbed a spike through my shoe, which made the rest of the stage super enjoyable. Fun stuff! |

Me and my kid (age 16) ran Burial Mound RnG today in Pawnee, OK. Fantastic events, highly recommend. This was his first run all on his own, no coaching or help from anyone. He came in 32. I shot poorly on a couple stages, didn't burn anything down, but also no disaster stages. 6th place for me. 93 shooters today in the Oklahoma wind. Attached File |

| One yearat Lead Farm they used paper arrows stapled to the trees to mark the trails. All the stages ran in a line next to each other and you would go into the woods for a loop and back to the next stage. It rained and snowed durring the match and the arrows were laying all over the ground. It was pretty tough to figure out the routes since trails criss crossed over each other the the signs no longer pointed the direction. |

It’s rare to find something that you can’t do with M193. Unlike gasgun or PRS or something, the consequences of a miss on a probable shot aren’t that big. Just pull the trigger again if you are confident in your holds. Even for wind at distance for RnG, I’ll send one left edge, one half a target left, one full target left, all really fast. One of them is going to hit. That being said, I shoot PSA 77 gr. It’s cheap enough that I don’t mind burning it on close stages, and I know I can clear the long ones. It doesn’t cost much more than M193. |

Last weekend’s Heartbreak RNG in Wilmore, KY, lived up to its name again. Great group of ROs and match staff at this one. I’ve shot it each of the 9 years it’s been around. They learn something each time and implement. We really lucked out with the weather this year- it was dry and upper 30s in the morning. I overdressed a little, but sweating never hurt anyone. Luckily I didn’t get more than about 5 min of wait time at any stage so I never got cold. Attached File Attached File |

Last year I had a medium bag that I ran attached to the handguard the whole time. It was very useful, as most of the rifle shooting at that match was off of rocks with lots of jagged edges. This year I used a much smaller bag that I ran on the handguard for the whole match, and was much happier. Did all the things the big bag did, but at 1/4 the size. I tried some of the purpose-built handguard bags, like THIS ONE, but it didn't have enough 'loft' to do what I was looking for. I'm still playing with it. The other thing I learned was to stop getting sick right before the match. Last year I ran the match with pneumonia and this year I was only a few days beyond a negative COVID test, and that, combined with the altitude (5k feet, and I live at sea level) made for a trying match. Super fun, though. Really happy with all of my gear/weapons/optics/ammo selection. I ran Heartbreak a few weeks earlier up in Kentucky as well. I think I did pretty well, but they lost my scores. I don't really care--I just do it for the fun! |

I'm signed up for a Proving Grounds with my son in May, then a team one with my other son in Sept. I'm really stoked for these, I need something like this in my life. It's been a long time since I did anything competitive. Getting my gear and rifles ready now, training and testing. Anybody going to be at these? Cusseta and Clinton House. Oh, is there an updated link to that discord? |

For those that have done these, let me know if I'm overthinking this. Back in my infantry days slings were attached to actual non QD sling mounts. I now usually use QDs, but I'm not doing anything really active with them until now. I'm super paranoid I'm going to break or accidentally engage the button on QD swivel while running/crawling/etc. Seriously thinking about going to uloops or something similar. Thoughts? |
