| Am wanting as a courtesy to the neighbors, to make some sort of sound deadining device, maybe like a inverted U shaped "tunnel" to put on top of the bench, that would enclose most of the bbl and extend 18" or so past the muzzle, probably something about 20" high and wide. Figure Styrofoam might be good to help kill part of the noise, was wondering if you guys had any ideas. Maybe there is a soundproofing insulation type material.. but also need it to stand the muzzle blast.. would probably make the outside shell out of sheet metal or wood, just wondering what to line it with the take away as much sound as possible.. Any ideas?? to be used for .22 , Ar and up to .308 , 22-250 etc...... thanks... |
I've seen that, too. Guy had 12-15 tires set up in a box built out of plywood. Tires were filled with old pink household insulation, and chicken wire was lined inside the hole of the tires front to back to keep critters out. It also had a front and rear door, to keep crap from blowing through it when he wasn't shooting. The whole thing was mounted on his shooting bench and painted "Natural" colors. The tires were mounted up a little from the shooting surface, so shooting off of a bipod or sandbags would put the barrel pretty much down the center of the tires. Note that he passed on to me, use truck tires with as large a rim as you can find, so you have enough space to shoot through and still have some visual room for your scope! Seems he tried it first with smaller car tires, and either had to shoot through the lower 1/3rd of the opening, or deal with shaded vision from the scope. Worked pretty good, as long as you were off to the side. Still pretty loud out front with the .308, but the tone was definately lower, and somewhat reduced. Do still wear hearing protection, though. | thats a pretty good idea. I already use 3 stacks of tractor trailer tires filled with various stuff for a backstop.. I've heard that the styrofaom egg cartons stacked up make a good sound barrier.. maybe put inside a removeable enclosure may work. Any more ideas???? |
| Warpig, thats not an option, I have 70+ different firearms. the range is in my backyard, 100 yards.. I mostly shoot 5mm, Ar's ,M-14, Swedish Mausers, and 1911's. Just need something to take the "edge" off the noise, only neighbors really will be to the left of the shooting bench, straight down range is a big hill,, |
this is a good option. use yellow insulation, it is better then pink for sound deadening. drill holes in the bottom of the tires so they drain water. packing foam, or as someone else called it, egg crate foam, is a good sound absorber. You can deflect sound to some degree with plywood if tires are not an option. If using plywood don't go for more then 30 degrees of deflection at a time. Also with any sound treatment lots of uneven surface area is best, bringing the tire tunnel back as a great option. |
| It would be better to line the tires with Rock Wool insulation. It will not catch fire. Ever. Even if the cellulose builds up and a fire happens, very possible with a lot of shooting, the fire would burn out inside of the tires. Put a blowtorch to a hand full of Rock Wool and it won't even singe the hair on your hand. We use it for firesafing in commercial construction. |
