Ok, hopefully someone can help steer me in the right direction for what I need here. I have a YHM Black Diamond Specter XL flat top with YHM flip up BUIS. A fantastically well made rifle, and off the shelf had 90% of what I wanted on it already. My problem is that I also have a Rock River Arms single piece hi-rise rail/ring system for the scope I want to put on this rifle, and it's such a long mount, that is bridges the receiver flat top and the free floating rails. This wouldn't be an issue except that the picatinny spacing from receiver to rails is off about half a slot! The RRA Hi-Rise has two screws and one nub to align in the picatinny slots, and at least one of them needs to be on forearm rails! Both the rifle and the scope mount are great pieces of kit for the money, but currently incompatable without giving up the rear BUIS...which IMHO defeats the purpose of a BUIS in the first place. I'm trying to build a well rounded weapons system, so I'm not willing to give up the BUIS. Is there another scope mount (preferrably high rise), in the same quality and price range as the RRA one, that has a smaller foot print so as to be small enough to mount exclusivly on the receivers picatinny and not bridge to the forearm rail? I'm pretty sure the LaRue makes 1 piece scope mounts that would fit, but they are 3 times the cost of the RRA mount and outside my current budget (and no offence to RRA, but they look to be a better product, especially with the Quick Release). So I see two design problems here; The RRA is overbuilt...it's just too long for practical use on a well balance weapons system. Sure it's great as a stand-alone, but that's not the case here. Second, I'm surprised that YHM doesn't have the picatinny spacing from the receiver to the forearm rails perfectly matched. Is it common for picatinny slots not to match up like that on most rifles, or do they have enough adjustment to compensate and match up? Thanks in advance for your suggestions. |

The Burris PEPR would do nicely, but it's out of stock most places. You'll have to eyeball the other one-piece mounts and see if they are any shorter, as nobody much gives that kind of data.
A lot of mounts take up the whole rail, for some reason, and don't leave room for a BUIS. RRA messed up when they re-designed this mount, as it's pretty good in most other respects, but they made it too long. Here's the Big List of AR15 one-piece mounts, including sections on rings and extended rails. Many are shown mounted, and you can see how much space they leave on the rail. Thanx for that info!
So is it common for the picatinny rail spacing to NOT match up between the receiver and forarm? I would figure the design would allow some adjustment to make sure the spacing is correct, but I don't see how with the YHM. I already have an E-mail in to them to ask if they have a solution. Honestly, so far I feel it's the only flaw in this carbine. |

Update, YHM called me a little bit ago, and explained that due to the design of the rail (so it leaves no gap between the rail and receiver), there is really no way to modify the rails to make the spacing correct. Bummer. On the brighter side, they were very great over the phone, very patient with me and offered me a few bucks off a rail extension that should help me use the hardware I have and bypass the picatinny spacing issue. Great people at YHM. |
