How does the broken case shell extractor tool work and is it needed in that type of situation or is it not a big deal to remove on the spot with no tools. I see them advertised around and there not very expensive. Dont know if this is something talked about here I find the search doesn't work very well when I try to use it.

It's fo rwhen the case head breaks off of a round, leaving the rest of the brass in the chamber.  You put the extractor inside the left-behind brass.  The extractor grabs onto the spent brass, and you work the action normally, extracting it.

So could a pair of long needle nose pliers do the same thing

Probably not.

A fired case would not leave an edge to grab.  Besides, pliers, assuming you could get them into the chamber, could easily scratch the chamber.

Yesterday I had a case break on me.  The bottom of the case ejected and the rest remained in the barrel chamber.  Fortunately it came out with a cleaning rod and a new 32 cal brush.  I just ordered that broken shell extractor.  It looks like a good tool to have now that I will re load 223 ammo.
