This is probably a stupid question. . .
I never see this done and I’m assuming there’s a good reason for that but, if you have a flat top AR and a decent free float quad rail is there some reason that a scope can’t be mounted with the rear scope ring on the receiver and the front ring on the forend?

Mounting on both the upper receiver and the railed forend are not as solid as mounting both rings on just the upper receiver.  There is a small amount of flex between the two parts.

If you had a solid one piece upper/forearm then no issues mounting the scope on the receiver and forearm.
The other option is getting the ARMs rail which attaches/bridges the upper and forearm (little bit old school - check the early SPRs).

Now days the typical option is getting a scope mount with enough offset (see the LaRue catalog ;-).
